Austin Mayor Pushes for Night of the Bat
According to an article recently published in the Dallas News, mayor of Austin want to name the first Sunday of June the “Night of the Bat” in honor o the Mexican free-tailed bat.
As the official animal of the capital city, the Mexican free-tailed bat already has received one honor in Austin. This honor was bestowed upon the bat largely because Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. In fact, their home on the Congress Avenue bridge houses about 1.5 million of these bats.
The bat colony “is known all around the world,” said Mayor Lee Leffingwell in a prepared statement. “I think Brand Levitra it’s appropriate…that we take one night each summer to celebrate one of the things that keep Austin weird.”
To have the first Monday of June named the “Night of the Bat,” Leffingwell has proposed a resolution to the City Council. A formal resolution to name this night the “Night of the Bat” isn’t required to celebrate this special bat, however, as many groups have already come together to host a special “Night of the Bat” celebration on June 6. The celebration, which will take place on the Congress Avenue bridge, will primarily consist of a free concert in honor of the bats. Adam West, who was the star of the 1960s Batman television series, will also be attending the event. In fact, he will be attending a special screening of Batman the Movie, which premiered in 1966, at the Paramount Theatre.
The celebration won’t end here, however, as the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau will also be holding a “Batini” contest, which will be a contest between local hotel bartenders who will try to make their hotel the home of Austin’s official drink for the year. The Run-Tex will also be hosting a Bat Run/Walk to celebrate the special event.
So, why are these bats drawing so much attention? First of all, it is no secret to those who live in Austin that its residents take pride in being different. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the residents of the capital city would embrace an oddity that clearly makes it different from other major cities. The fact that the bats are different isn’t the only reason to celebrate their existence in the capital city, however, as the bats also help give the Austin economy a healthy boost. In fact, the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that 125,000 people visit the Congress Avenue Bridge each year, providing the city with an estimated $12 million in revenue.
At this point, it is unclear how much the special “Night of the Bat” celebration will cost or who will perform at the special concert being provided to the public for free.
Although the city will not provide any funds for the event, it is planning to waive the fees normally required for use of the bridge. The funding for the special event will be provide by Paramount Theatre, Tadacip Downtown Austin Alliance, Run-Tex and the visitors bureau.
