Fashion Non-Investments
Recession-friendly style is the new In thing, and even the high and mighty fashion houses are hopping on the bandwagon. ‘Investment pieces’ and ‘timeless looks’ have become the buzzwords for fashion-conscious men everywhere. There are, however, certain items that look buyable at first but are actually bad style decisions in a well-marketed package. Here are a few to watch out for, especially if the store doesn’t offer a return policy.
Fur
Greenpeace might be opposing fur fashions for a whole other reason, but the message is the same: don’t wear it. Not only is the stuff environmentally unfriendly – think of all the mammals that go into a single piece – but it’s highly unlikely to work on you as well.
It looks fine on women, it’s true, but it’s a whole other game for men. The lush fabric is simply too difficult to work with, especially if your wardrobe is mostly of the shirt and tie variety. Is it extremely cold out? Tech fabrics are a sleeker and propecia hairline more timeless option. For spring, there are lighter unlined jackets and coats that are better for keeping you warm. Taking either alternative would also be much, much cheaper.
Leather Apparel
Unless you’re a militant environmentalist, you’ve likely considered a pair of pants or a vest in leather before. When that time came, you hopefully put the merchandise back in its place. Except for leather jackets (for which you can sub patent PVC), the only leather items you ought to own are shoes, belts, wallets and watch straps.
As a fabric, leather has the unfortunate tendency to stretch and emphasize anything that’s under it. Worn as a pair of pants, for example, that means it’ll draw Brand Levitra attention to your legs, thighs, butt and, yes, even the family jewels. It’s not a pretty picture, especially if you have a few things to hide like most men. Leather clothes are pricey and are generally a bad idea. Heck, even Lenny Kravitz swapped out his pants for a pair in good ol’ denim.
Polyester Suits
If you’re old enough to need to wear a necktie, you’re old enough to wear a suit. Since a suit is easily one of the priciest and most timeless items in a man’s wardrobe, you may as well do it right. ‘Right,’ by the way, means nothing in the way of polyester.
There are two reasons to eschew polyester suits. Cialis First, they’re dated. They were last made common in the 1980’s, and even GQ acknowledges what a sartorially challenged decade that was. Second, they’re cheap. They’re cheap to buy, but they look cheap too. If you’re going to buy a suit, buy something in good, climate-appropriate wool or blend fabric. It’ll last you years, which makes it worth the extra couple of hundred bucks.
Statement Anything
Whether it’s a statement shirt or belt, you’ll be better off staying away from it. The piece might look witty or funny for the first ten minutes, but you and your friends will tire of the punch line after a couple of wears. It’s far from the ideal investment piece.
Grown-up men simply do not wear punch lines or lewd messages on their clothes, period. Leave it to adolescents and kiddults to do that. Do you want to stand out and make a style statement
? Try wearing an eye-catchingly bright color or a logo that means something to you. Statements and messages need never be literal and spelled out; a sports brand logo, for example, is enough to convey that you’re the sporty, athletic type.
Ed Hardy
The visually busy Ed Hardy tee was difficult to wear before Jon Gosselin even donned his first shirt. Trendy but pricey, those two characteristics make the standard tat-print Ed Hardy tee an unwise style investment for men.
Jeans can be trendy for months, neckties for years and suits for decades. Most Ed Hardy wares, however, can get tiring after a few days. The print is large and full of activity, making it hard to pair with any other piece. If all you wanted was to make a statement or catch attention, a solid shirt in some neon color would be more effective and less subject to trends and time.
