Men’s Style Guide: Wearing Necklaces
Neckties are universally accepted accessories for men. You can wear one any way you like, whether or not ties are in fashion. Necklaces, meanwhile, would be a whole other story. Despite stars like Johnny Depp who have incorporated a necklace or two into their style, most still don’t accessorize to that degree. It’ s time all that changed for you.
The Size Question
Women can wear any kind of necklace, from the smallest choker to the biggest and chunkiest multi-strand creation. For men, however, the selection is unfortunately much narrower.
Size-wise, necklaces work much like neckties. Too small or too thin will make it seem too dainty and effeminate. A too-large one, meanwhile, overpowers the rest of your outfit. The ideal style is one that is understated, yet still has some heft. Something in the region of the dog tag lace, which is a good middle ground for most guys, is ideal.
Most of the heft will have to come from the pendant, which should be the focal point of your necklace. If you don’t want to seem too feminine, look for ones that feature everyday objects like coins or hooks. Leave the fashioned gemstones and shiny metals to the ladies. You wouldn’t want it to get too big, though; a quarter or dollar coin should be a good baseline for the size.
One mistake that men often make when wearing necklaces has to do with the length. It’s typically too short like a choker or too long like a dangling boho piece (which only works for women anyway). Aim for one that places the pendant about a forefinger’s length below your Adam’s apple, which works for most guys.
Understatement, Understatement
Although the necklace is an accessory and accessories are meant to be seen, it still shouldn’t be the central piece of your entire outfit. Unlike the unquestionably male necktie, guys wearing necklaces mixes the feminine and masculine sides of fashion. Keeping it subtle prevents any impressions that you don’t want to create.
Hemp, twine and other fibers are perfect for men because they’re simple, tough yet interestingly textured. They’re visible but they don’t scream out for attention. If you must use metals, look for ones with a brushed or matte finish. Glittery pieces are best for the ladies, and the bling style never went well for men anyway.
Balance and subtlety are the key fashion terms for looking good with a new necklace somewhere in your outfit. Guys don’t usually benefit from having loud and garish neckties. Necklaces don’t give you that kind of license either.
