The Early Years

Before Austin was ever settled by Europeans, it was inhabited by nomadic Native American tribes. The Barton Springs creek played an important role in the lives of these indigenous peoples, as they set up campsites alongside the creek and fished and hunted in the area on a regular basis. By 1835, Anglo American settlers started to arrive in the area. Two years later, they founded the village of Waterloo, which was located along the Colorado River. In 1838, the vice-president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar, visited Waterloo and declared that it would be “the seat of future government.” Shortly after, Lamar was elected president of the Republic of Texas.

When Lamar attempted to name Waterloo as the state capital, he was met with a great deal of opposition. Sam Houston, for example, felt the area was vulnerable to raids from Mexicans and Indians. Lamar, on the other hand, felt Waterloo was in the perfect location because it was at the intersection of the roads that lead to San Antonio and Santa Fe. Lamar ultimately got his way, but decided to rename the area in honor of Stephen F. Austin. That same year, the Republic of Texas Congress decided to set aside 40 acres of land for a “university of the first class.” This later became the central campus for the University of Texas.

Austin Grows as Texas Becomes a State

After Anson Jones became president of the Republic of Texas in 1844, he started moving forward with efforts to make Texas part of the Unite States.

By 1845, the state was admitted to the Union. In 1861, however, the state became part of the Confederacy and remained that way until 1865.

After the Civil War ended, things really started to move forward for Austin. In 1871, the first train was established in the downtown area, which helped the capital become a shipping and mercantile center for Central Texas. Ten years later, the city schools opened its first public schools in the city and the University of Texas opened its doors to its first public classes two years later.

Modern Day Austin

By the 1970s, Austin became a popular place for the “alternate music industry.” Some artists who were part of this music scene included Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Today, Austin has earned a reputation for being a place for musicians to launch their careers. In fact, it is now known as “The Live Music Capital of the World.”

In the 1990s, the capital city also started to see a significant amount of growth within the technology industry. At first, this was largely centered around larger companies that were already well established. By the late 1990s, however, other companies within the technology sector started to set up shop in the city as well.

It is thanks to the creative music scene, alternative culture and ample employment opportunities within the technology industry that many young people choose to move to Austin and why those who already live there love to call Austin home.
