One of the hardest decisions to make during a landscaping project is what kind of stone and what type of patterns to include in your plans. Brick is often an ideal choice for paving a patio because it is cheaper, easier to lie down and still looks fantastic.

Brick paved patios are partly cheaper because you can lay them down yourself. This effectively saves the cost of having to pay for another’s labor to do the task.

After you decide what type of pattern, color, and size of brick you want it will be time to lay the foundation for your brick patio. This is the most important step because it will make sure that the bricks stay level for years of use.

To start simply take a shovel and scrape of the grass in the area you want the patio to be in a manner that will allow you to put some of the grass back in around the edges of the patio. Then, dig about six inches plus the width of the brick paver deep in the area where you want the patio to be.

It is also very important to remember that the patio will need to be sloped in order for it to have the longest lifetime possible.

Otherwise water will collect on the patio and destroy it.

After the area is the proper depth it is important that you compact the dirt. Otherwise the dirt will settle after the brick pavers are placed and your patio will become uneven.

Spread sand that is two inches deep across the top of the gravel in these sections. The top of the pipes should still show through the sand.

Level the sand by using a 2 X 4 piece of wood. Leveling the sand this way is called screeding and it provides a level surface that is ideal for keeping the pavers in place.
