When I was nine years old, I was in a grade school that had a large number of Japanese children. They were my friends. They were California born, and their parents had been born there. They were land-owning farmers. They grew food to feed us and flowers to please us. This was 1941.

One day my friends were in class. The next day they were gone. A Concentration Camp was their fate for the next several years! This was the United States of America, home of the free and the brave.

Reality came into my life in 1941. I determined then and there that I would learn to be self sufficient, kind, compassionate, generous, loyal, dedicated to my principles, and infinitely curious and diverse about everything. Desperately, I wanted to teach myself something that I could excel in.

However, I do not know that I have found what that “talent” is. I adore music, and took lessons for 6 years. No. Art? Absolutely not. Dance, same answer. Writing? I am still trying to learn that.
