When you look into what it takes to become a medical transcriptionist, you may hear about the advantages to becoming a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). You may hear that some schools offer certification. Is this something you should look for when picking a school.

The reason for this answer is simple. The test to become a CMT is offered by AHDI. It is not designed to be passed by a medical transcription student. It’s designed for transcriptionists with at least two years of experience working as an acute care medical transcriptionist. And it’s meant to be challenging for them.

There is also a Registered Medical Transcriptionist test you can take after graduating from a medical transcription training program. It’s meant to show that you have the basic medical transcriptionist skills.

What confuses many students is that training courses often offer a certificate of completion or refer to their training course as a certificate course. This is not the same as becoming a Certified Medical Transcriptionist. All the certificate from your school does is say that you finished their program with whatever qualifications they set.

If a school tells you that it prepares you for the CMT test, look very carefully at what it is they’re offering. If they say you’ll graduate their program ready for it, they’re feeding you a line. AHDI won’t even let you test for a CMT without that experience. You cannot possibly graduate ready for it. Find a different training program.

On the other hand, schools can legitimately offer training for people who want to get ready for the CMT test after they have the required experience. There’s nothing wrong with offering a CMT preparation course. Just don’t expect to be allowed to take it as a student or new graduate.

The most important thing your medical transcription school can offer you as a new student is a high quality training program that will qualify you to work as a medical transcriptionist.
