Site owners started recognizing the value of having their sites ranked higher as it makes them more visible in the results. This creates more traffic to their sites and consequently opportunities for SEO practitioners.

The term search engine optimization then started to catch on and the term for it was coined in 1997. Early versions of the algorithms heavily relied on webmaster provided information such as the keyword meta tag, or index files in engines like ALIWEB.

Meta tags then provided a summary to each page’s content, which was found to be less reliable because the webmasters would manipulate and often put in misleading information about the site to draw more traffic to it. So, search engines quickly found out that they needed to explore beyond the meta tags and into the actual content of the page due to all the inaccurate representations on the internet.

Content providers would also manipulate a number of attributes within the HTML coding source of a page to try to rank higher in the results. Therefore, it was all one big bunch of lies.

Such inaccurate, incomplete and inconsistent data caused the searches to come out irrelevant and ultimately were failing. Now that they explore all the content involved and linked to, the explorations are more relevant than ever.

The engines are also looking forward to improve the relevancy further. The industry is always improving and updating which keeps associated businesses and web designers on their toes.

So, today’s system is much more efficient at locating the actual content of a site. It relies on many more factors like keyword density which is exclusively within a webmaster’s control.

The keywords are a strategically chosen to be popular with searches that people perform. To provide better results to users, engines now have had to adapt to ensure their results pages showed the most relevant results rather than spam filled pages who were manipulating the systems.
