Exploring the city of Washington DC
There are so many great things to do in Washington DC and one of the best things about this city is that most of the attractions are free! Home to many museums, parks, and national monuments, you are sure to find something of interest.
You will also learn quite a bit about the government of our country as you visit the Nation’s capital. The largest attraction in DC is the National Mall.
When you think of a mall, you probably think of shopping, but this is a different kind of mall. The National Mall is actually an open-area national park in downtown.
Here you will find gardens, memorials and the United States Capitol Building. While visiting the National Mall, here are a few stops you must take.
First visit the Washington Monument. It is a monument honoring our nation’s first president, George Washington.
The monument is 555 feet tall and if you ride the elevator to the top you will get a great view of the city. Plenty of other memorials can be found at the National Mall including the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, the Arlington National Cemetery, the DC War Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial, Pentagon Memorial, World War II Memorial, and many more!
You will also find other war memorials and memorials for past U.S. Presidents. You can then take a free, guided tour of the U.S. Capitol Building.
This building has amazing architecture and is where the Senate and the House of Representatives have met for over two centuries. There is also a visitor’s center at the Capitol, it is free and open Monday through Saturday.
Also located at the National Mall is the Smithsonian. It is a historic institute full of museums.

Union Station also has a food court with more inexpensive options. The Old Post Office Pavilion also has a food court.
Another great free thing to do in DC is check out the National Theatre’s free performances. They offer shows designed for the whole family.
A good thing to know if heading to the National Mall is parking is sparse. It is best to use public transportation.
Several metro stations are located nearby and a day pass is not all that expensive. There are also many hotels located near the National Mall so it can be easy to access.
Some of the hotels include the Holiday Inn Capitol, Mandarin Oriental Washington, Hyatt Regency Washington, Hotel Monaco, Hilton Garden Inn and many more. Another fun thing to do in DC is see how money is made.
