After showcasing her talents on the small stage of Coachella’s indie rock music fest mid-April in Indio, Calif., Imogen Heap jumped into orbit as she announced tour dates for the rest of summer. The British star has seen her singles “Hide and Seek,” “Just for Now” and “Goodnight and Go” achieve underground and mainstream success. She now continues to support her latest effort Ellipse.

Talking to LiveDaily following her Coachella performance, Heap revealed that she likes to write as unconventionally as possible. “I discovered that I don’t need to sit in a room like an asylum, and write music and force myself to stay in these four walls. It kind of occurred to me that now maybe I have a little cash, and I could actually…I have the time to go outside of the studio.” The result of these “outside” sessions was the summer release Ellipse, a set that peaked fifth on the Billboard 200 charts, the Brit’s highest appearance to date.

The album was a follow-up to the 2005 critically acclaimed Speak for Yourself, an album that earned her attention as it was the U.S. solo debut from this Frou Frou vocalist. Though Heap had already released the full-length I Megaphone in 1998, the 2005 version was a departure from anything fans would come to expect from the star who had gained notoriety with her alternative rock outfit.

The album is named after her elliptical shaped house, which she revealed during an NPR interview from September 2009. Heap recorded the RCA/ Megaphonics Ellipse in her Essex home throughout 2009. The social media fiend who has asked fans to help her create a cover for her new album first gained fame thanks to her million-plus Twitter Brand Cialis followers and 44 million MySpace plays.

“It’s been so amazing. I’ve always struggled with this barrier that I felt like I’d had up until blogging came along,” she said to NPR. “Just one comment from somebody really sparks something in me. It doesn’t need to be this huge war between me and the listeners anymore. I really thrive on that.” Feeding off of her fans helped Heap see her biggest success, as fans pushed the album to the top of Billboard’s Electronic Albums.

Despite the huge success of Ellipse, Heap had already established herself as a powerful artist with her work through Frou Frou. Creating her own musical Viagra Professional path, Heap earned notoriety during her performances with Frou Frou, a duo that worked with Heap’s vocals and Guy Sisworths’ arrangements. Yet by the time Frou Frou found fame, Heap had already been a solo artist for a decade, having signed with Almo while still in her teens. Her debut I Megaphone appeared in 1998, though she turned to group work when the first album didn’t produce much buzz. Frou Frou released Details in 2002 as the group gained mainstream fame when “Let Go” appeared in the Garden State soundtrack. Heap returned to a solo career in 2005.
