The Indianapolis 500 isn’t simply one day of racecar driving festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Ind. The Indy 500 is billed as the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” for a reason, and this year’s 500 activities will commence in early May, almost a month before the race itself springs into action.

The 2010 Indianapolis 500 will mark the 94th running of the prestigious race, and this year’s big events leading up to the Memorial Day weekend race will begin Sat., May 8, when the first day of the Centennial Era Balloon Festival kicks off in Speedway. May 8 also marks the beginning of Indy 500 season with the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, which takes runners through downtown Indianapolis and around the racetrack at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a triumphant lap during the largest half-marathon in the U.S. A sold-out crowd of 35,000 runners will line up for this year’s 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, which will start racing month off in Indianapolis with a 13.1 mile footrace.

Opening day at the IMS will commence May 15 with rookie orientation and the start of practices, and Fast Friday will be the following week on May 21. Pole Day qualifications will take place May 22 with Bump Day the following day, and May 28 marks the start to Memorial Day weekend chaos with Miller Lite Carb Day. This year’s Carb Day features legendary rock band ZZ Top as the day’s live entertainment, and the crew will perform a free show for everyone with tickets to Carb Day following the day’s Cialis Jelly racing events.

The Carb Day Concert will cap off the Carb Day racing festivities, and ZZ Top will keep the excitement on the racetrack as the weekend’s Indianapolis 500 will commence two days later. Jeff Belskus, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation, spoke about ZZ Top performing at this year’s Carb Day on the Indy 500’s website, saying, “Miller Lite Carb Day is all about excitement and a good time, and that’s exactly what ZZ Top delivers with its high-octane music. Sun., May 30 will mark the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500, and racing fans with Indianapolis 500 tickets to the Greatest Spectacle in Racing will get to see IndyCar’s fastest foes face off for the acclaimed open-wheel race. Helio Castroneves returns this year after a phenomenal triumph at the 2009 Indy 500, and he’ll have all the usual suspects nipping at his heels to win the biggest race of the year in 2010.
