Pavement Tickets – Pavement Performs First U.S. Show Since Reuniting at Coachella
Influential indie rock outfit Pavement first announced plans to reunite and embark on a world tour in 2010 in September of 2009, and the band performed one of their first U.S. gigs since the announcement at the Coachella Valley Music Festival. Held April 16 through 18 at its usual Empire Polo Field location in Indio, Calif., this year’s edition of Coachella also featured performances by LCD Soundsystem, Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz, MGMT, Phoenix and many more. It was fitting that Pavement performed at Coachella this year, as one of the group’s final American shows before splintering in 1999 was at Coachella.
Along with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke (who performed with his new side band Atoms for Peace) and Gorillaz, Pavement closed out the 2010 edition of Coachella on Sunday, April 18. After Pavement delivered anti-corporate anthem “Unfair,” lead singer Stephen Malkmus told the crowd in his usual self-deprecation, “That’s the ’90s in a nutshell.” Billboard.com raved about the band’s Coachella performance, saying, “With a tightly performed set, the group breezed through its discography confidently with punched-up arrangements that took advantage of Coachella’s outstanding sound system.” The lo-fi legends performed “Shady Lane,” “Cut Your Hair” and “Range Life” during their set.
Pavement fans that weren’t able to make it to the desert to see the band at Coachella should head online for Pavement tickets to see the band Brand Cialis this summer. After a 10-year hiatus, Pavement is back and will perform at a few other music festivals-Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival and Washington’s Sasquatch Music Festival-along with a string of tour dates this summer and into fall. Among the reunited band’s tour dates are a string of four shows in New York’s Central Park in September.
Although the Stockton, California-bred quintet has a string of dates Silagra lined up, Billboard.com reported last fall that Pavement’s longtime label, Matador Records, made it clear that the band has no plans on recording any new material. Pavement did release a greatest hits compilation titled Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement on March 9, 2010. The 23-track compilation spans Pavement’s career from 1989 to 1999, and although it doesn’t include any previously-unreleased material, it does feature rare gems that stray from the band’s biggest hits.
Guitarists and vocalists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg created Pavement as a studio project and began churning out a string of raw recording in their now-signature lo-fi style in 1989. Drummer Gary Young, bassist Mark Ibold and percussionist Bob Nastanovich joined the lineup and Pavement released its debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992. Steve West replaced Young the following year and the band continued to garner fame on the college rock circuit. Four more studio albums followed-1994’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, 1995’s Wowee Zowee, 1997’s Brighten the Corners and 1999’s Terror Twilight- via Matador Records.
Terror Twilight was Pavement’s biggest success, which was why it came as a shock to fans when the group disbanded following their tour in support of the album. In the wake of the band’s split, Malkmus formed the Jicks and has found ample solo success while Ibold plays with Sonic Youth and Kannberg records as Spiral Stairs. Rumors of a Pavement reunion surfaced each year since 1999, and fans have finally gotten what they’ve been wishing for!
