While in Myrtle Beach, be sure to test your putting skills on the countless mini greens in the area. All of them are meticulously landscaped and pleasantly adorned with tropical plants and flowers throughout the warm weather months.

Each one has a different theme. You can choose from many options including man eating dinosaurs, lava spewing volcanoes and high sea adventures complete with pirate ships.

Minigolf has a unique history that has led to what it is today. Some even call it crazy in the United Kingdom, but it is basically a smaller version of the sport.

This is a great activity for adults, expert frequenters, kids and anyone in between. If you can swing the club lightly, you can succeed.

This is a game that really puts your putting skills to the test with diversions and hurdles throughout each green. So, if your putting needs refining, this is a great way to get in some entertaining practice or just goof off and have a good time.

In fact, the first minigolf course in the world was produced by the Men’s Putting Club of St. Andrews in Scotland, which was founded in 1867. It is currently still open and operating to the public.

It is an 18 hole course of putting greens called “the Himalayas” and was founded by some members of the notable Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews. It was created due to sexist people of the past.

Women had gained an interest in the game, but due to conservative social boundaries during the era, it was deemed unacceptable for women to play such a violently moving swing in public. Therefore this 18 hole smaller green of short putting greens was constructed for women, creating the first minigolf course in the world.

The earliest recorded mention of such a course is in the 8 June 1912 edition of The Illustrated London News, which introduces a minigolf green known by the name of Golfstacle.

The first standardized greens to enter the commercial scene were the Thistle Dhu (“This’ll Do”) courses in 1916 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and the 1927 Tom Thumb patent of Garnet Carter from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Also, Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn, a golf fanatic, revolutionized the game in 1922 with his formula of suitable artificial green which was a mixture of cottonseed hulls, sand, oil and dye.

This American boom in the early 20th century came to an end during the economic depression in the late 1930s. Nearly all the courses in the United States were closed and demolished before the end of the 1930s.

However, one rare surviving example from this period is the Tall Maples Miniature Golf Course found near Rochester, New York. This has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the year 2002.
