Summer of Style: Ditch Denim

Denim, like jersey and wool, is one of those staple fabrics of fashion. As trendy as, say, Dolce & Gabbana fashion shows would try and make them, however, there are just those times when jeans aren’t the best answer. Summer is one of those times when denim is just too scratchy and too warm to be worn in the heat. When summer comes, you’ve got to have other options to complete your sunny day outfits.

Chinos
Khaki pants (‘khaki’ and ‘chino’ are typically interchangeable in fashion speak) have a long, storied history in men’s fashion. Originally standard army issue pants in World War II, civilians grew to like the lightweight but hardy fabric for casual wear as well.

Later on, chinos became a favorite of the preppy crowd, quickly growing into a staple at prep and Ivy League schools. The association with pastel polo shirts, v-neck knitwear and white tennis shoes is still very strong today. More recently, brands like Dockers and Gap have given the chino a new and contemporary twist. That has led to the resurgence of the style and its current popularity at retail outlets.

In warmer weather, chinos are about the coolest and most versatile replacements for jeans that you could find. Are you going out for a walk to enjoy the nice weather? Throw on a plain white tee and flip-flops. Is your lunch cialis review date waiting at that fancy new bistro? Pastel shirts with dark neckties bring the formal factor to your outfit, even without a suit.

Make Brand Viagra no mistake, though: chinos are still on the relatively casual end of the scale. You can wear them to the office but not to a boardroom presentation or a black tie affair. Aside from that, you’re free to dress it up or down as you please.

Linen
Using flax instead of cotton fibers has its benefits, and the best way to exploit them is with a pair of linen pants. Blends of linen and cotton are already quite common in office fashion – 60/40 is the magic number – but linen alone is a performer in casual wear too.

Linen pants have the same versatility as chinos and the formality of black slacks, only with less weight and heat. Go to any tropical country and you’ll find most upper crust men have at least a pair in their closets. Not only is the fabric light and airy, it also wicks sweat away from your skin, doing a better job than most of keeping you cool in the heat.

Unless you’re explicitly going for the Indian guru look, you’ll want a pair of linen pants cut like regular slacks. Because it’s so light, linen has a tendency to become unwieldy and flap around unattractively if the fit is too loose. The fabric usually has good drape anyway, so it’s very forgiving when it comes to fit.

One of the great things about linen is that there are so many items that are now made out of it, so you shouldn’t have trouble complementing your pants. Even linen suits have become very common in the last few years, so you can be both formal and comfortable.

Cotton
Lighter than wool and cleaner cut than denim, cotton pants are your most formal option for summer, not least because most of the styles come in black. Cotton might not have as good a wicking property as linen, but its drape and texture gives clients and bosses the best kind of impressions about you.

The recommendation for the season is to get a pair of cotton pants in gray, which should then be paired with some brown leather accessories. Better yet, you could go all out and buy a full cotton suit to get you through all those garden parties and office presentations scheduled for the summer. You could even get yourself a cotton necktie as an option for casual events if you want to go the whole nine yards.

As you can see denim isn’t the only choice during warm weather, and it’s far from the best option when the mercury starts to rise. Once Memorial Day has come and gone, you’d better have these summer cialis cheap essentials stocked and ready.
