The Basics Of Ethernet Cables

Increasingly people are choosing to create their own computer networks and naturally this means wiring your own Ethernet cables, plugs and sockets. It can be a difficult task but this step by step guide should help the DIY enthusiast build the foundations for a solid network.

The benefits of going the do it yourself route in regards to cabling is that you have the option to create custom cable lengths. For example, a twenty five foot long cable is hardly suitable when all you need is a two foot piece of wire. But how do you wire an Ethernet cable? Hopefully the following will be able to help.

Ethernet cable is one of the most common and important elements in modern computing and home entertainment set ups. Typically an Ethernet cable is used to connect a device, such as a computer or a games console to the internet and to networks, allowing for online usage, downloading and streaming. Fortunately, Ethernet cables are so widespread that it is not difficult for amateurs to find a suitable item for their needs.

One of the first things to remember however is that not all Ethernet cables are exactly the same, there are a variety of categories that vary in terms of quality; that quality determining the amount of data a specific cable can handle.

Cat 3 cable is usually used for voice communications and anything up to 10Mb Ethernet. It is the lowest in the ranking system and hence the least capable of handling large amounts of data. Most people see these as an older form of cable that has now been replaced by higher quality categories.

The next step up is Cat 5. Cat 5 Ethernet cable is used as the successor of Cat 3. It can handle around 100 Mbps and interestingly has a thinner wrapping to reduce the number of twists and hence interference.

Cat 5e cable is an advanced version of the Cat 5. The major advancement is that it can handle gigabit Ethernet and as such is more than capable of performing well in both domestic and more commercial environments. Predominantly this type of cable is widely available at low prices and hence is one of the most widely used options.

Cat 6 represents one of the higher end categories of cabling, it is once more a step up from the Cat 5e variant. This form of cabling is most popular for networks that are running close to Tadacip capacity and need higher data transferral speeds. As you may expect this category is physically thicker than cat 5 variants.

The first step is to take an end of the cable and cut it straight; follow this by stripping the external casing about an inch from the end, if you are fortunate enough to have a cabling tool this is a simply task as all you must do is apply pressure, rotate the cable and then slide off the casing.

Once the first step is completed you should have four twisted pairs of cables (if using Cat5e cable). Each pair has one colour, one wire being solid the other striped. These colours are typically blue, green, orange and brown. All you must do is to separate the cables so that the four pairs become eight separate wires.

You then must arrange the wires into the correct pattern for insertion into the plug. By flexing the wires manipulation of the wires can be made much easier. There are a number of wiring sequences used in Ethernet cabling, in most cases diagrams of these can be easily found on the internet.

The fourth step is to take the wires in sequence and insert them into the RJ45 plug. If the wires are not of equal length at this point it can be worth making a straight Brand Levitra cut across all of them. Once you have slid the wires into the plug ensure that each of the exposed wires are in contact with the copper elements of the RJ45.

Finally once the wires are inserted, use a crimping tool to press each of the wires into place. This is performed holding the wire in one hand and squeezing the crimping tool with reasonable force. This stage secures each of the wires in its place and it is always a good idea to repeat the process to ensure all connections have been made solidly.
