A sight that never ceases to amaze is the highest, driest, and windiest continent in the world that boasts 10 pound tiny baby fur seals and 3 million tons of ice not to mention ice that holds about 3.3 billion gallons of water.

Probably two of the most wide traveled teachers have chosen Antarctica, the land of frozen wastes and uneventful expeditions, as the location for their Christmas holiday.

Saying that they have been to the continent is what drives these teachers to continue with their plans of going to the land of Antarctica. Considering the amount of time they spent on this idea for a vacation they even read about the explorer in a travel magazine.

Preparation was important, the women found. The dress code for a day in Antarctica requires three pairs of socks, at least one in wool under a pair of rubber boots that weigh 15 pounds, insulated underwear, a regular set of clothes and a parka, all topped by rubberized, seamless and waterproof pants and slicker. One waterproof and one regular pair of gloves complete the list of clothes.

From cold feet, the situation can always develop into a case of frostbite. The summer in the Southern Hemisphere is this way.

Although the ice was warming to a point above freezing and travel can be done through the breaking ice pack as a result the water was still at a level of 32 degrees.

A thermometer reading of 47 degrees for air temperature resulted from one particular Antarctic research station. As nightfall came so did the snowstorms and sleet storms for the Explorer which was far different from its prior exposure to the sun.

The women were told of how unpredictable the weather could be not to mention how winds dictate the itinerary for the day. In their 24 days in the southern ice cap they did not encounter the 84 below wind chill that they experienced in their hometown last Christmas.

Dreaded but overcome was the Drake Passage. There have been a lot of casualties in ships lost to the passage from the tip of South America in Cape Horn to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Bunk seat belts were used by the women as they strapped themselves in for sleep during the 48 hour passage of the Explorer. A lady donned some bruises after being bounced around.

Numerous penguins surfaced. One lady said, they would walk right up to them and their nests, almost touch them.

While scooting around, their mouths were open. These are not as gentle if you get close to them and their babies.
