With cars getting faster and more powerful all of the time, there has to come a point when a car can no longer be produced that can reach record breaking speeds whilst still being road legal.
Until then, here are the top ten fastest cars of all time.
1. SSC Ultimate Aero. Able to hit a top speed of 256.14mph flat out (as recorded by Guinness World Records on 9 October 2007, the Ultimate Aero has a 6.2 litre, twin-turbo V8 engine that produces a staggering 1183bhp.
2. Bugatti Veyron. Coming in second with a speed of 253mph, the Bugatti Veyron actually reaches 60mph, from standing, 0.2 seconds quicker than the SCC Ultimate Aero, managing to get to it in a mere 2.5 seconds. 6. Ferrari Enzo. Named after the founder of the company, the Ferrari Enzo is a stunningly good looking machine and its 6 litre V12 manages to give this favoured Ferrari a top speed of 227mph.
7. Jaguar XJ220. In 1993, Guinness World Records officially recorded the XJ220 reach an average top speed of 213mph over a two-way track. One of the most beautiful cars on this list, the XJ220 has a twin turbo V6 that offers 542bhp and allows the car to do 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds.
8. Pagani Zonda F. A V12 engine is the power behind the Zonda F and although it can hit 60mph from still in 3.5 seconds, its top speed is 41mph slower than the Ultimate Aero at 215mph.
9. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. A particularly largely produced car in comparison to the others on this list, over 4,000 Murcielagos were sold in Lamborghini dealers around the world whilst production was apparent in 2001 to 2009, according to figures provided by Lamborghini. The LP640 was recorded as being able to reach 211mph and whilst you will still be able to buy one in some Lamborghini dealers, you should expect to pay in excess of 100,000 pounds.
10. Porsche Carrera GT. Produced for 2 years between 2004 and 2006, 1,270 Carrera GTs were made, each of them producing 612bhp from the 5.7 litre V10 that they were fitted with. Capable of reaching top speeds of 205mph, the Carrera is one of the most iconic sports cars on this list.
