As one of the most popular cities in the UK, York is located just south of central North Yorkshire and is ideally situated for access to a vast array of different attractions located near by.

1. Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo – falling into the top 20 most visited theme parks in Europe, Flamingo Land was opened in 1959 and due to its expansion and development over the years is now home to just under 60 rides.

One of Flamingo Land’s most popular rides was The Bullet, a completely unique loop roller coaster when it opened in 1991. Closing in 2005, it has fortunately been replaced by various other popular rides, including the recently opened Mumbo Jumbo roller coaster, which boasts the steepest drop of any roller coaster in the world.

2. Castle Howard – known most prominently as the location of the 2008 film Brideshead Revisited, Castle Howard is a Grade I listed stately home that was built in the early 18th century.

Covering 13,000 acres of land, the gardens of Castle Howard are beautiful, encompassing two fantastic structures – the Temple of the Four Winds and the Mausoleum in the Park.

3. The Forbidden Corner – for all intents and purposes, The Forbidden Corner is simply an area of land filled with buildings and statues that will make you smile.

Originally built as a private pleasure garden in 1980, The Forbidden Corner was opened to the public not long after and acts as somewhat of a treasure hunt location, with all visitors being provided with a check list of things they should see, including a pair of legs sticking out from a wall and a somewhat hidden statue of a giant.

4. Eden Camp – originally a World War II Prisoner of War camp, every one of the camp’s huts has been transformed into a mini-museum Tadacip for a part of World War II. From the Blitz and being evacuated to traditional 1940s house, Eden Camp is one of those attractions where you could spend hours on end taking everything in.

5. National Railway Museum – opened in 1975, it is a common misconception that you won’t find the National Railway Museum interesting unless you’re an avid fan of trains.
