Established in 1946, they play in Candlestick Park in California and are headquartered in the Marie P. DeBartolo Sports Centre in Santa Clara, California. Their mascot is Sourdough Sam, and they are owned Brand Viagra by Denise DeBartolo York and John York, who are also chairmen over the team.

Their head coach is Mike Singletary while all the business is run by the Yorks themselves. Their team nicknames include the Niners, the Red and Gold, Bay Bombers and the Team of the Eighties.

They are quite a successful team having won 5 super bowl championships in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1994. Additionally, they have won 5 conference championships, 17 division championships and have made 23 playoff appearances in the AAFC and in the NFL.

They made the transition from Kezar Stadium which they occupied from 1946 until 1970 to Candlestick Park where they have been since 1971 until now. There is a significant history behind this franchise that has contributed to what its fans know it as today.

The San Francisco 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise based in the San Francisco area and one of the first professional sports teams in the Western cost of the United States. That is not the only first for the team, however.

The 49ers have also won five NFL championships making them the first team to win a record five Super Bowls. Currently, they are the only team amongst those who have played in many Super Bowls this decade to never have lost a Super Bowl game.

Another thing unique to this team is that they have coined the term “the catch” referring to the play named by sportscasters. It was started by older 49ers players who practiced the “Alley-oop” passes that Y.A. Tittle passed off to the lanky receiver R.C. Owens way back in the 1950s.

There is a picture of Clark’s leap in the air taken by Walter Iooss, Jr. This photo originally appeared on the cover of that week’s issue of Sports Illustrated and it was also featured in an autumn 2005 commercial for Gatorade sports drinks.

The Niners had a 20-0 lead at halftime that game which led to their Super Bowl XVI win. This was a legendary season for the San Francisco team.

Another thing this team is known for is its back to back Super Bowl wins in 1988 and 1989. They were chosen to go to their third Super Bowl XXIII, located in Miami after a struggling season which they barely qualified.

At halftime, the big game was tied 3-3. The team tried to stay relaxed and calm though much was at stake and there was tremendous pressure on the entire field of players.

Then, they had the greatest drive in Super Bowl history, as Joe Montana drove the team 92 yards for the winning touchdown off of a pass made by John Taylor with only 34 seconds left on the clock. The final score was 20-16, and the 49ers won.

The following year, Coach Bill Walsh retired and his defensive coordinator George Seifert was handpicked to take over all coaching duties. It was that same season that they were qualified to go to the Super Bowl XXIV after a 14-2 season in which they gained home field advantage during the playoffs.

At this Super Bowl, they were able to defeat the Denver Broncos at a 55-10 score which set a record for points scored and widest margin of victory scores in the history of Super Bowls. It was then that they became the only back to back winners.

So, it is clear to see that this team is a very accomplished one indeed. The next time you are in San Francisco, you can stop by the team’s home field and see a game or a team practice by some of the most renowned players for a classic team.
