If you’ve owned a car for several years, you’ll be aware that as of May 2010, it’s never been as expensive to run a vehicle as it is now.

To start with, petrol costs for last month were at the highest that they had ever been, according to the monthly report produced by the AA. The findings showed that for one litre of petrol, you should expect to pay 120.5 pence, which equates to 60 pounds if you were looking to fill a 50 litre tank.

Although these petrol costs alone put the strain on anyone’s car running budget, the fact that there was a change to vehicle tax rates as well last month didn’t help.

In essence, the new rules state that everyone who buys a brand new vehicle must pay a separate vehicle tax, known as first year rates, based upon the amount of CO2 emissions that the vehicle produces.

Therefore, if you were to tax a car that produces 166 to 175 g/km worth of CO2 emissions, therefore falling into Band H, you would normally be required to pay 170 pounds for a full 12 months worth of vehicle tax.

However, under the new legislation, if you bought a brand new Band H car, the tax amount would rise for the first year to 250 pounds.

The idea behind this move is to encourage people to buy more economical and environmentally friendly cars, but it has been met with – understandably – a lot of criticism by many car owners.

So what can you do to combat these rising costs?

Heading down to Smart dealers and purchasing a ForTwo may not be a suitable option for those people with larger families, but if you can use Smart’s fantastic two door car, you can expect to save a small fortune on the amount of money that you would normally spend on running costs, as well as knowing that you’re doing your part in helping to save the environment.
