A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Shares Her Typical Day
Sarah had been Mrs. Miller’s nurse for three months now. Sarah is a licensed practical nurse who loves to take care of older people as Mrs. Miller’s family has seen firsthand. She lives with them on the weekdays and goes home on weekends.
Sarah was giving Mrs. Miller a sponge bath. She heated the water first and prepared a lukewarm bath for Mrs. Miller. This poor old woman had suffered a stroke and half of her body was paralyzed. Sarah checked the water’s temperature and when it was ready; she caringly took Mrs. Miller’s robe off and guided her to the tub. She gave Mrs. Miller a sponge bath and massaged her paralyzed body as she goes. Mrs. Miller looked at her with much appreciation. They hired Sarah because her children were too busy at work and with their own families as well but they were always there visiting their mother and seeing that her needs were taken care of.
“Hi Holly,” Sarah said, “Your mom is ready for dinner. She is all cleaned up already.”
Holly the eldest daughter smiled, “Thanks Sarah, sorry I arrived a little late. I would have given mom her bath myself.”
“No problem.” Sarah pushed the wheelchair toward the table and Holly gracefully took over.
“Sarah, could you please prepare mom’s dinner.” Holly said, “I will seat her at the table.” Holly placed the table napkin at her mom’s chest and prepared her utensils. Mrs. Miller could still use the left side of her body and she opts to eat by herself.
Sarah brought in her tray, “Dinner for tonight is mashed potatoes and grilled salmon. Dessert is watermelon.” She said as she served the dishes.
“Sarah, join us for dinner.” Holly said. Sarah took her seat beside Mrs. Miller. “How was mom today?”
“Mrs. Miller did some exercise today. We walked in the garden for thirty minutes.” Sarah explained. “Did you enjoy that Mrs. Miller?”
Mrs. Miller mouthed out, “Yes” in a muffled sort of way. Her speech was affected by the stroke. She also had a little trouble opening her mouth to eat but she gingerly manages to.
“Holly, are you staying over tonight?” Sarah asked and Holly nodded. “I would like to take some early time off after I have administered your mom’s medication.”
“You could just give me instructions so you can take off now,” Holly offered and Sarah smiled.
“I have prepared the medicines in separate cups; I also have placed the hour when your mom should take them. The other medicines are in the fridge in her room. I will leave you a note about them. They are only to be taken on emergency situations. In which case, call me immediately.” Sarah explained.
“Relax, Sarah, let your hair down. I will take care of mom tonight. Don’t worry about it.” Holly said reassuringly.
“I know you will, Holly.” She smiled and added “Don’t forget to set the thermostat at seventy seven degrees Fahrenheit, OK?”
“Yes, Sarah. Run along now and I will update you Monday morning.” Holly said.
Sarah embraced Mrs. Silagra Miller and Holly. “Take care you two.”
