As food was being developed they wanted to find a way to pack in the nutrients and also keep the food light. This was the idea that sparked made ready to eat meals for the officials that were in charge of developing food.
Made ready to eat meals were not made to taste excellent or to be a fine dining experience. They just wanted to make sure that the soldiers were getting everything that they needed as far as food goes.
