Finding the Right Color for Your Hair
We all reach a point where we’re tired of our hair and want something new and exciting. Enter hair color. Whether it’s permanent or temporary, one shade or highlights, hair color can make you feel like a new person. Unfortunately, some people go for colors that are too extreme or not right for their skin tone, and they end up looking unnatural or funny. Here are some tips to help you find the color that’s right for you.
Some people look good with any color of hair, but most of us don’t. How do you know if you can go blonde? If you had blonde hair when you were a kid, then there’s a good chance you can pull it off as an adult. More indications that blonde would look good on you: fair or pink skin that easily burns and green or blue eyes.
So what do you do if you are a brunette and are looking for a change? If you have pale skin, try for a lighter brown. Going too dark can make you look washed out or older than you really are. Don’t color your hair more than two shades lighter than your natural color. On the other hand, if you have darker skin, feel free to go a little darker with your hair.
Almost everyone can pull off hair red. However, it’s imperative that you find the right shade of red. If you don’t want to end up with pink or orange hair, have it done by a professional. At the very least, get a consultation. Red is a fabulous color that can certainly make you feel like a new person–you just don’t want it to be the wrong kind of new.
Maybe you’re trying to decide if you should change your entire color or just get highlights. If your natural color washes out your face or lacks some verve, try single-process color; going for a full color change is cheaper than highlights, but the color will need to be touched up more frequently. If you have a great hair color already, you should probably stick with highlights. The goal is to enhance what nature has given you. Highlights turn out the best when there are at least two different shades, and having more around your face will brighten your complexion. You can get foil highlights, baliage or hair painting, chunking, and/or lowlighting. Hair painting is probably the best choice if you have a great base and just want to go a couple of shades lighter.
Remember, even though you’re coloring your hair, you want it to look natural. Let that rule govern your actions, and you won’t ever have to worry about looking like a clown.
