Arab sailors were the first to discover Mauritius, and the Dutch colonised in 1598, later being passed to the French. It was captured by the British in 1810, and gained independence in 1968, becoming a republic in 1992.

While the official language is English, most of the locals speak French, although a variety of languages are spoken, including French, German, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Sanskrit and Creole.
