Playing With Animals: My Career as a Veterinary Technologist
My parents taught me to love and respect animals. I can still remember the first pet they gave me, a goldfish in a cute little bowl. I was so fascinated with it that I would usually fall asleep looking at it all through the night. It was so beautiful in my eyes that I wasn’t satisfied with the goldfish as my only pet.
And so, I had a dog named Monty, a Persian cat named Leslie, a talking parrot named Polly and of course my first pet goldfish named Silent. Actually, they were my toys back then. Whenever I came home from school, I played with them and talked to them. I even brought them to school once when we had our pet day. They were my best friends that time and they are the ones that gave me hope when I feel down. I owe them a lot and promise myself to repay them for what they have given me and shown me.
Right there and then, I realized that my dream was to have a profession that will give me the chance to live, breathe and be happy with animals at my side. And so I decided to be a veterinary technologist and did not ever have a second thought or regret with the profession that I have chosen. Even though I was still studying, they gave me the chance to work part-time in a small veterinary clinic. After I graduated, they promoted me into a regular position which I was very grateful for.
Whenever I work in the clinic, I never get tired, because I feel my patients gives me all the energy that I need. Every day is a different day with them and never a dull moment. Animals simply are awesome and a bundle of joy to be with. They play around in their cages, give you the sad eyes when they want something and cry when they feel pain.
Unfortunately, sometimes a pet dies on me, and then I have to deal with them and clean their cage. But this is a natural part of the work that I love and of the cycle of life. I need to work through this less enjoyable part, because I enjoy being with and helping the animals get better and stay healthy.
This kind of job is never easy. It just turned out that I really love to be with animals. And I think that my patients are a part of me that I can’t live without. Animals are like humans and they need to be taken care of.
Currently, I have my own pet with me at home. He is a golden retriever and his name is Gerry. He loves that I give him even more attention than I give my animal patients. His favorite part of my job is when he gets to visit and meet the other dogs. He helps me practice the skills that I need to be good at my work. All in all, I love having a job where I can be with animals during my entire day at work.
