A card game that originated during the American Civil War, five card stud poker is the earliest variation of stud poker. However, it is not as commonly played nowadays as other poker games. It remains as a popular game though in other regions of the world, particularly in Finland, where they play a variation of the game known as Soko.

The game is played with each player being dealt a card face down and then another one face up, starting from the player who is on left of the dealer. If the game is played with a bring-in, then the player who has the lowest card that is faced up should pay the bring-in and then betting continues afterwards. If there are two players who have cards which have equal rankings, then suit rankings could be used for breaking the tie. If the game is not played with a bring-in, the first betting round would begin with the player who has the highest ranking card that is faced up. That player has the option to check. In the event that two players have the same cards that are face up, the one who is first in a clockwise rotation starting from the dealer could act first.

Once the first round of betting is complete, another card that is face up is then dealt to each of the players, after a burn card and starting with the player who is on the left of the dealer. Betting can then begin with the player who has face up cards which make the best hand in poker. On this round and the following betting rounds, the player who acts first could either check or bet up to the limit of the game.

The second betting round is then followed by Viagra Professional dealing a third face up card to each of the players and a third betting round can again be started by the player who has the best poker hand, which means that the player who can act first on each round could change. After dealing a fourth face up card and after the fourth betting round, a showdown can be executed, if needed, although it usually would not be necessary since most five card stud deals end early when one of the players bet but gets no calls.

Because the traditional game of five card stud poker basically involves a hole card and four face up cards, making it fairly simple for even beginners to effectively assess the strength of a hand of an opponent. The transparency of the player’s hand pretty much eliminates the element of uncertainty which is usually found in the more popular poker games such as Texas Hold ‘Em and seven card stud. To increase the element of uncertainty, there have been a number of variations of the game that have come out including high-low, Canadian Stud, two down-three up, three down-two up, one down-three up-one down, Mexican stud, Asian five card stud, Telesina and shifting sands.
