1. Don’t expect to pay for your drinks in a casino – one of the problems, for want of a better word, which a lot of people who visit Las Vegas first encounter is that they will very rarely have to pay for a drink when they’re in a casino, assuming that they’re gambling.

Don’t be surprised if you’re at a slot machine and a waitress walks up to you, asks what you want to drink and then doesn’t tell you how much it is when she’s brought it back. As long as you tip along the way – one or two dollars per drink is fine – you can enjoy free drinks all night.

2. Tip well – as shown in the drinks example, you need to make sure that you tip well. In England, tipping isn’t something that is widely done. The majority of people will tip 10% at the end of a meal in a restaurant and although it’s becoming more and more frowned on not to do this (assuming the service is good), it’s not unheard of for people to not leave a penny.

In America, however, tipping is expected and to give you a general idea of how to tip, if you’ve sat down and had a service such as a meal or taxi ride, you want to be tipping around 20%. For services that you only need briefly, such as Bell Boys or maids, one or two dollars will suffice.

And don’t forget to tip the croupier. It doesn’t have to be much if you haven’t won, but they’ll definitely appreciate it nonetheless.

3. Ditch the 9 to 5 feel – Las Vegas is open 24 hours. Not everywhere may be open around the clock, but you’ll be able to find a good selection of casinos, bars and places to eat that are still open at 3 am in the morning.

In the UK, with the exception of London, it’s odd to find a restaurant still serving food after 9.30pm. In Las Vegas, though, it’s a given.

4. Take a jacket – as much as Las Vegas might be in the middle of a desert and reaches close to 50 degrees centigrade in the summer, the autumn and winter nights can be quite cool.

Plus, even in the middle of summer, you might still need a jacket – enter any casino along The Strip and the air conditioning will be working overtime, keeping the whole building at a particularly cool temperature.

5. Don’t stop in a casino with a child – simply put, children (that’s anyone under the age of 21) aren’t allowed in casinos either if they’re on their own or if they’re accompanying an adult at a table or a slot machine.
