Eminem was always a force to be reckoned with. From the start he had to break a ton of barriers. A white rapper from Detroit that sang about real life hardships rather than degrading women, he was profiled in Rolling Stone, Spain, The Source and others before his first tour. Born Marshall Mathers, Eminem was rapping by the time he was 14 and settled in Detroit after moving around the country. Working under the name “M&M” along with friend “Manix,” the rappers started to gain a reputation enough so that they earned a place in some well known rap groups of the area.
When his girlfriend Kim got pregnant, Eminem turned his rhythms into a hobby so that he could support his family. However, he still managed to record and release the album Infinite in 1996, an underground hit. While supporting the tracks, Eminem’s life started to crumble in front of him, beginning with a split from his girlfriend. After moving in with his mother and seeking solace in drugs and alcohol, Eminem developed the character that would lead him out of his misery. The Slim Shady EP was the first indication of his alter ego; featuring unforgettable lyrics that earned him an Interscope Records contract. And with that Eminem was back on track.
The Slim Shady EP featured the 1999 single “My Name Is,” an instant hit that had Eminem working with Dr. Dre. Following the success of the first LP, Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP the next year, earning attention for his fantastical lyrics. Eventually he became gossip fodder for his hits on celebrities, though he broke all barriers when he performed at the Grammys with Elton John. The duet shattered all rumors that Eminem was homophobic and helped to widen his audience. The crossover success came just as the film 8 Mile opened in theaters, a film praised for Mathers’ acting ability and his work on the Oscar winning song “Lose Yourself.”
One of the world’s biggest stars at this point, his third album The Eminem Show appeared with the single “Without Me.” After coming on so strong, the next album Encore was a relative disappointment and followed a stint in rehab and cancelled concert dates. Though retirement rumors were dispelled when he appeared in 2005’s Curtain Call: The Hits, Eminem disappeared for a few years. He returned in 2008 Tadalis SX only sporadically and came out in full force in 2009 with Relapse, the first official announcement that Slim Shady had returned. Recovery, which had originally been deemed Relapse 2, appeared in June 2010.
