You enter your local gym for yet another session of exercising. You feel the warm, humid air when you enter into the doors.

This is, of course, from all the bodies and the excessive sweating that is going on. It might be a little bit gross to think about, but you clear your mind and focus on the workout that you are about to do.

You decide to do some pre-workout stretching. You grab onto the exercise bar and stretch out your muscles.

Once your workout is complete, you decide to go and take a shower in the locker room. You strip down and take a shower and then dry yourself off.

Once that is done, your day of exercise is complete and you proceed to go home. Another normal day at the gym, right?

One of the dirtiest and grossest parts of the gym is actually the very equipment you get on and use every day. Many people are courteous and wipe their sweat off after each use, but millions of bacteria can still call these pieces of equipment home.

There are several things that you can do before and after you jump on a machine to ensure that you aren’t giving yourself a virus or sickness just by touching it. The first is to make sure to wash your hands before and after you use the piece of machinery.

By holding onto the machine railing or pressing the on board computer, you are sure to have picked up many germs from previous users. Washing your hands ensures that these germs don’t stay with you throughout the rest of the day.

Many fitness centers also provide disinfectant at each machine so that you can clean the handlebars and other parts of the machine. You can apply this before and after you use the piece of equipment to give yourself added protection in addition to washing your hands.

The next grossest place in the gym would have to be the shower and locker room area. This is a great feeding ground for nasty microbial things.

One thing you need to do is wear sandals or flip-flops into the shower with you. Just think of how many people have walked with their bare feet on that shower floor!

It is very easy to contract athlete’s foot or some other fungal infection from a shower. This could translate to some other bodily problem which can give you a sickness.

This is the same concept that you can apply when going into the sauna. Many people don’t even use a towel when sitting down and put their sweaty body on the surface.

You can protect from this by using a towel to separate your body and the sauna surface. This way, you are protecting yourself and those who will use the sauna after you.

Finally, it is a good idea to bring two towels with you to the fitness center. This might seem like a hassle, but it can help you stay clean.

Bring one towel to dry yourself off after exercising and showering. Use the other towel to wipe off sweat from equipment that has been used before you.
