Minimize Cavities With These Easy Steps

Failing to brush your teeth and avoiding regular trips to the dentist encourages bacteria growth, which eventually will destroy your tooth enamel and cause your teeth to decay. The progression of decay once it has set up in the tooth enamel is extremely slow.

However, once it has progressed beyond the first layer of enamel, it will speed up as it nears the pulp of the tooth. The blood supply and the nerves are both contained in the pulp area of the tooth, making it critical to the tooth itself.

As the tooth decay begins to deteriorate the nerves, the pain will become most intense. Tooth decay will often take 2 – 3 years to eat its way through the enamel.

However, it is capable of penetrating through the dentin to the pulp in about one year. Once inside the dentin, the decay will spread and destroy most of the structures within the tooth within a few months.

However, the slowest spreading decay, often referred to as smooth decay, is also the easiest to prevent. It often sets in when people are in their twenties, and can be identified by a white spot visible on the tooth from the destruction of the enamel.

It is recommended that you see your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. And it is advised to floss every day and brush at least twice a day.

It is recommended and advised, however most people do not follow this sound advice. With the added burden of eating the horrible American diet of sugars and sugary beverages, some of us are “shocked” when we are told we have cavities!

There are things you can do every day to help minimize getting cavities. This article includes many tips to help you keep your mouth healthy.

Use a straw when drinking fruit juices, soda pop, and even coffee. Soft drinks and coffee stain your teeth and the sugar in them will erode the enamel on your teeth. An easy way to stop this is by simply using a straw on a regular basis when drinking those kinds of beverages.

Drink water when eating something sweet. Why? Because drinking water can be as effective as flossing. The water helps to get in between the teeth, which stops sugar from doing as much damage as it can.

Another tip, simply make sure you drink water. First, it will stop you from drinking all those sugary drinks. Second, most cities like in Chicago, where I live, put fluoride in the public drinking water. It good for your teeth. In fact, I would go so far as to say, drink tap water instead of buying bottle water.

Use a mouthwash and toothpaste with fluoride in it everyday. Fluoride helps to maintain strong and healthy teeth.

Eat a piece of fruit. Eating a piece of fruit, especially an apple, helps to clean teeth between brushings, makes for a good snack, and fresh fruit helps to fight tooth decay.

Don’t eat sweet snacks during the day, but only after dinner. Sugary foods attack your teeth 20 minutes after you finish eating them. If you eat something sweet after dinner, you are more likely to brush your teeth soon after, as oppose to during the day.

Chewing sugarless gum can help promote good dental hygiene and help to reduce cavities. Why? Sugarless gum helps produce saliva, which turns out to be a natural mouth rinse. It is also a worthwhile alternative if you can’t brush your teeth after eating.

When flossing remember to pay special attention to the back of your teeth, which a lot of people over look. Spend about 3- 5 minutes brushing your teeth, twice a day. This may sound a like a long time, but the extra minutes can go a long way in keeping your teeth healthy and strong. If you think it is too hard, set a timer or watch a series of commercials; when they end, you can stop brushing.

Buy a toothbrush that has the ADA (American Dental Association) stamp of approval. Also make sure it is soft and have round bristles. Besides that replace your toothbrush every three months or after getting over the flu or a cold.
