NBA Tickets – Best Offseason Moves
Here is a look at some of the best offseason moves that teams made this summer.
Miami Heat: It’s pretty obvious that the Heat had a decent offseason. Landing arguably the best player in the league, keeping another top-five player on your roster and adding another All-Star usually qualifies as a good offseason. The Heat built themselves into a perennial power this summer with the acquisitions of LeBron James and Chris Bosh, as well as their success in keeping Dwyane Wade, but did a good job of putting other solid players around those three in guys like Mike Miller and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. The Heat are probably the favorite in the Eastern Conference now and could end up becoming a dynasty if things go well. No matter what, this team is going to be incredibly interesting in 2010-11 and should sell a ton of NBA tickets.
Chicago Bulls: The Bulls may have elevated themselves to the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference this offseason, despite missing out on each of the Big Three that went to South Beach. The team finally landed a solid post presence in Carlos Boozer and added a shooter in Kyle Korver. The additions of Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Watson were solid, but I think Boozer’s post scoring and pick-and-roll presence will be the biggest addition to the team. In addition, Korver’s shooting touch should help stretch the floor for Boozer and franchise point guard Derrick Rose.
San Antonio Spurs: I didn’t like the deal they gave Richard Jefferson, but they got a huge bargain in Euro import Tiago Splitter. The Brazilian center had become one of the best big men in Europe over the past couple of seasons and the Spurs have held his rights since selecting him in the latter portion of the first round in 2008. The Spurs desperately needed a defensive-minded center to relieve Tim Duncan of playing in the middle, as he did for much of last season. Splitter’s presence should not only extend Duncan’s effectiveness, but he came at a fantastic price. This was a classic Spurs move.
New York Knicks: I’m still skeptical of the Amare Stoudemire contract, but Silagra the Raymond Felton deal was a great one. The Knicks needed a stabilizing force at the point, which Felton will surely provide. The former Tar Heel loves getting out on the break and running at a break-neck pace, which will suit him very well in Mike D’Antoni’s offense. If he can continue his hot shooting from last season, Felton could put up career numbers in the Big Apple over the next two years. However, the best part about this deal could be the length of the contract, a mere two years. This factor could allow the Knicks to go after Chris Paul in the summer of 2012, unless they somehow trade for him before then.
The Knicks also did a great job in getting value in return for departing free agent David Lee. Lee was leaving NY either way once the team signed Stoudemire, so getting some assets in return for the forward was a great play. Anthony Randolph has star potential, Ronny Turiaf should provide some much-needed interior defense and Kelenna Azubuike could be the team’s starting two-guard once he’s healthy.
Utah Jazz: The Jazz didn’t give up much for big man Al Jefferson. The Wolves were operating from a point of weakness because they’d admitted that they had to trade either Jefferson or Kevin Love, but one would think that they still could have gotten more than a trade exemption and two first-round picks that are likely to fall in the 20s. Jefferson was one of the league’s most dominant post-scorers before going down with a knee injury two seasons ago. He didn’t quite return to form in 2009-10 but was effective and should be even more so this upcoming season with an additional offseason of rest under his belt. The Jazz saved their offseason with this move, as Jefferson should thrive under a half-court minded coach like Jerry Sloan.
