NFL Tickets – Calvin Johnson Leads Second-Tier of Fantasy Wideouts
Assuming that you don’t get your hands on Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson or any other top five wideouts, it’s time to start thinking about other receivers that can get the job done. Following Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne, here are the next best fantasy options at wideout in 2010.
10. Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys. Last year the only way that Miles Austin landed on your fantasy team during your draft was by accident. But the completely unknown receiver had a breakout season in 2009 with 81 catches, 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns while quickly emerging as Tony Romo’s go-to guy. This year, rookie receiver Dez Bryant will make the offense as a whole even more formidable, though this could potentially cause Austin’s numbers to dip a little. Still, Austin is a very precise route-runner and has clearly elevated himself above Roy Williams. While Williams and Bryant battle it out for the number two slot, Austin should see plenty of targets all season long.
9. Sidney Rice, Minnesota Vikings. The advantage Rice has over Austin is that Brett Favre doesn’t have quite as many other weapons as Tony Romo. Percy Harvin is another nice option but Rice is in great position to put up a big season as the number one guy. After putting up 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns last season, he could very well come close to repeating that in 2010. If he’s around a little late in the draft, don’t hesitate to take him. As long as Favre plays, that is.
8. Greg Jennings, Green Bay Packers. Last season, Jennings Viagra Jelly was a bit of a disappointment with just four touchdowns and 68 catches but still put up more than 1,100 yards receiving. The advantage for Jennings, though, is that he plays in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers, who is one of the premier gunslingers in the entire league. Even though Donald Driver had another good season in 2009, Jennings is the number one wideout on the team and he should finally have the type of statistical season to prove it. Rodgers is known to spread the ball around but he’ll also be throwing the ball a lot in 2010. A season with 1,200 yards and eight or nine touchdowns is definitely in play.
7. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons. With a healthy Michael Turner in 2010, the field should open up for Roddy White. Over the last three seasons, White has been one of the most consistent targets in the league, averaging more than 1,200 yards per season over that time span with solid touchdown numbers to boot. White is also the unquestioned number one receiver on a team with a pretty good quarterback in Matt Ryan, which should propel White to yet another big season in Atlanta.
6. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions. Not only is Calvin Johnson one of the Lions’ best sellers of NFL tickets but he’s also one of the most talented wideouts in the entire league. Not everyone is sold on Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, but I think he’s a gritty kid who can be a very good quarterback in the NFL.
Johnson’s ability to run every route on the field should make him a top five wideout someday, or potentially even number one, but being on the Lions does inevitably hurt his overall fantasy status. But even on the Lions, Johnson showed that he can be a great fantasy option, which he did in 2008 by putting up 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last season, he was somewhat limited by injury but still put up decent numbers in the 14 games that he played. If he can stay on the field, expect Johnson to have a big season.
