NFL Tickets – Preseason Power Rankings
Here are the Top 10 teams in the National Football League as we head into training camp for the 2010 season, listed in order:
Indianapolis Colts: Despite losing in the Super Bowl to the Saints, the Colts are the favorite to win it all heading into this season. Peyton Manning is the most consistent quarterback in the league and makes the most out of a talented group of receivers. The Colts will need to get their running game going in 2010, though, and will likely look to second-year back Donald Brown to help in that department. The Indy defense might not sell a ton of NFL tickets when Bob Sanders is sidelined, but the unit has been pretty solid over the past few seasons.
New Orleans Saints: The Super Bowl champs didn’t lose much following their magical season, which puts them atop the NFC to begin the 2010 campaign. Drew Brees has truly mastered Sean Payton’s offense and has become a perennial MVP candidate. However, this team is not without its flaws. Their propensity to give up the big play last season could come back to haunt them, as could their inconsistent running game.
Dallas Cowboys: I’m very high on the Cowboys this season. They’re a balanced group that could boast one of the most explosive offenses in the league in 2010. With wide receiver Dez Bryant in the mix and running back Felix Jones expected to fill a more prominent role, the Cowboys will have two premier game-breakers.
Minnesota Vikings: This ranking is obviously contingent on Brett Favre returning for another season. The Vikings were an overtime away from the Super Bowl last season and have not really lost much of anything from 2009. It’s hard to imagine Favre duplicating his 2009 stats, but one would think that he’d be good enough to again lead the Vikings to an NFC North title.
Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens could be the best team in the AFC if things go right in 2010; that’s how much upside they have. It remains to be seen how well some of the new pieces fit, but they should be improved on offense and steady as always on defense. Joe Flacco could be in for a breakout year with Anquan Boldin and some new tight ends at his disposal.
Green Bay Packers: They couldn’t stop anyone for half a season and still made the playoffs. They couldn’t block anyone for half a season and still took the Cardinals to overtime in the first round of the postseason. The Packers should be better and more consistent in both areas this season, which is why one can’t rule out them overtaking the Vikings in the North. Aaron Rodgers could be the best quarterback in the league, heading up a budding young offense that should really do some damage in 2010.
New York Jets: The Jets have a ton of potential and on paper look to be one of the most talented all-around teams in all of football. However, it remains to be seen how well some of the egos mesh in the locker room and how well second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez performs in his sophomore campaign.
New England Patriots: The Patriots were extremely underwhelming in their playoff loss to the Ravens last year, but expect them to again be contending for the AFC East title in 2010. I just don’t see another team I can put ahead of them on this list.
San Diego Chargers: There’s a lot of uncertainty regarding the Chargers due to suspensions and potential holdouts, but they should still cruise to the AFC West title.
Miami Dolphins: You could put Houston or Atlanta here and I wouldn’t really argue, but I liked the Dolphins’ offseason and think they could be a surprise contender in the AFC if their secondary can hold up.
