Safely Bringing a Bicycle onto a Subway Car
You live in a major metropolitan area and you love to bike. Too bad that your city is too crowded for you to take your wheels out on the road safely!
But you have found a great alternative: riding on your indoor exercise bike. That has enabled you to still do what you love while being in the silence and comfort of your home.
But while this has been a great alternative for a while, you are still itching to get back out on the open road. You want to feel the wind cascading off your face!
But, alas, there is no way that you could ride your cycle all the way into the city and do it safely. There is just too much rush hour traffic when you are on your way to work.
It would be a serious hazard to your life. Is there another way for you to enjoy your pastime while in the city?
Yes! It might not let you bike all the way to the office, but it will let you strap onto these pedals for at least a small amount of time.
It involves riding to the nearest subway station and walking your bike directly onto the subway car. It’s another great alternative that you can consider!
You might even be surprised that you are allowed to do that. Some people might have thought that it was against the transportation rules of the city.
Many metropolitan areas around the U.S. such as New York and Washington D.C. are now allowing bikers to take their equipment with them into the cars. The only catch is that you can do it only during non-rush times.
So what exactly do you need to do to make sure that you can take your bicycle on the train? Here are some steps that you can do to follow this process:
The first thing you need to do is look at your local subway map and determine which lines allow bikes on their cars. Some cities will only let bikes on certain lines, and they prohibit them on all others.
This may be because certain lines have the most people on them or they are always busy. If you usually use one of the prohibited lines, you might be out of luck!
If you are planning on using a train that allows cycles, then you can proceed to the next step. You now need to schedule your commute according to when the transportation authority allows bikes on.
Most authorities prohibit cycles from being on the trains during the morning and evening rush hours. This is because there are just too much people crammed into the cars during these times and there is no way that a cycle would comfortably fit in the cars.
Usually, these times are constituted between 7 and 10 a.m. in the morning and 4 and 7 p.m. in the evening. Your local transportation authority might have different times, so you will need to check.
Once you find the perfect line and the perfect time, you’re now ready to actually take your bike and use the subway system! There are a couple things that you will need to keep in mind once you get to the station.
When you take your bike down into the underground, you will need to use the service gate instead of the usual turnstile. The service gate is a bigger door that is used for emergencies or for mothers with big strollers.
Usually, the authority will let bikes through but it could be good to ask an employee and just make sure it is okay. If you can’t find a service gate in the station, ask an employee to help you.
When you get in the subway car, you need to be very courteous of other passengers, because they have the right-of-way. Besides, you are holding a big hunk of metal that can easily get in the way of a lot of people!
Don’t ever put your cycle in the way of seats or doorways. Also remember never to put the machine in places that people can trip on it when they are entering and exiting the car.
