Mustang Trekking – Jomsom and Beyond
For those adventurers who arrive in Mustang, trekking through this ancient Buddhist kingdom can fulfil an aspiration to explore a destination that is so remote that until 1992 was a closed book to western travellers. In a region where much of the population still believes the Earth is flat, trekking through this land, virtually untouched by modern life, is a fascinating insight into the true traditions and cultures of the ancient Tibetan way. Annexed by Nepal in 1950, Mustang, although once independent, shares a border with Tibet and the people consider themselves a part of Tibetan culture.
Situated north-east of Nepal this tiny region straddles the Kali Gandaki River at an elevation of around 3,000 – 4,000m and is bordered by some of the most spectacular peaks of the Tibetan Plateau. Often referred to as the “Hidden Valley”, true adventurers are drawn to the barren, yet strangely compelling landscape of Mustang. Trekking this area is not for the feint-hearted but those who undertake the journey will be rewarded by its fascinating topography.
Most expeditions through the kingdom of Mustang will originate from Jomsom situated along the two banks of the Kali Gandaki River, which is renowned for being the deepest ravine in the world. Although only the beginning of what will undoubtedly prove to be a fascinating journey along your Mustang trekking route, Jomsom should be awarded more than a fleeting visit.
With no proper vehicular roads into Jomsom, the options to getting to the town are a three day trek from Pokhara or to fly into the tiny airport. Without a doubt, the most spectacular option is the latter. The flight is a breathtaking introduction to the grandeur of the Himalaya, and as the plane climbs steadily to the level of Jomsom you can catch your first glimpse of Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world at an elevation of 8,167 m (26,795 ft). Its name literally translates as ‘White Mountain’ and as you arrive into Jomsom its spectacular peak rises above the cloud creating an awesome backdrop to your landing.
Jomsom itself is situated right in the epicentre of the Annapurna Circuit and the town, although small, has an inviting atmosphere with its narrow streets and a lively traffic of yaks, mules and an endless procession of inquisitive children. Although your accommodation in Jomsom will be basic, Viagra Professional it is comfortable and there is much to explore in the town itself and its surrounding areas. Jomsom’s altitude is not high enough to induce sickness but it is a perfect opportunity to spend some time exploring some of the tiny tea houses or village houses whilst you acclimatise.
Your exploration of Mustang, trekking through the ancient landscape of beautiful valleys and soaring peaks, and traversing crude mule tracks and pathways through traditional villages, will give you a wonderful insight into the history and culture of this ancient salt-trade route. You will travel alongside the Kali Gandaki River and make your gradual ascent through cliffs punctuated by salt-mines and caves. As you continue your trek through the Kingdom of Mustang you will get a taste of just how isolated and unique this region really is, and experience the awesome power and scale of the Himalaya.
