Are Fabiano and Kaka the Key to a Sixth World Cup Success For Brazil?

Without doubt, the ‘Golden Boot’ award for the top goalscorer in the World Cup will be an aspect that will be widely followed with many football fans wanting to pitch their wits against those of the bookmakers on who they think will be the eventual recipient.

To win this prestigious award it will be normally necessary for the winner to have played in at least five games, but more likely it will have to be the maximum of seven games. This means of course that soccer punters will need to focus their attention on the teams most likely to get to at least the semi finals, which, if the betting is anything to go by, will be Brazil, Spain Argentina and England.

Brazil will be the favourites of many fans to win the World Cup and if the Smaba Boys are to win the tournament for the sixth time, they will be looking towards their attack, spearheaded by the ultra consistent Luis Fabiano who’ll be playing alongside the mercurial Kaka to fire them to glory. These two outstanding players both play their football in Spain, with Kaka being a huge transfer acquisition to Real Madrid from AC Milan at the outset of this season, while Fabiano has played for Sevilla since 2005. Kaka has not set La Liga alight in his first season but Fabiano remains one of the league’s leading scorers.

Fabiano in particular has a fantastic goal to game ratio for Seville but his strike rate for his country is even more impressive. In only 36 games, the 29 year old striker has scored 25 goals, which is a stat that makes a mockery of his paltry 36 appearances. In fact Fabiano, has only established himself in the Brazilian side since new coach Dunga took the helm, although he did make his debut back in 2003 and with the 2010 World Cup being his first major tournament, he is sure to have a point to prove.

So good has been Fabiano’s form for Brazil that he has effectively replaced Robinho in the starting lineup, but it is possible that Dunga may play them both together in the World Cup itself. Fabiano won the ‘Golden Shoe’ award in the 2009 Confederation Cup, also in South Africa, scoring five times in three matches and that kind of form during the summer will put him in contention for the Fifa Golden Boot award.

Kaka, voted the best player in the world in 2007 has also been a very consistent scorer for his country. In 73 appearances he has scored 26 goals, but it should be noted that many of those goals came from his attacking midfield role and whilst he may not score as many as others in the Brazil team, he still remains probably the biggest threat to any opponents defence.

Kaka had a very similar strike rate for AC Milan a club for which he played six years for. In that time he made 193 appearances and scored 70 times. However, it has to be said that his form for Real Madrid this season has been hit by injury and he has only made 20 appearances for the Spanish giants. Nonetheless he has still scored seven times, but four of those have been from the penalty spot.

Clearly both Fabiano and Kaka will be a huge handful for most defences in South Africa this summer and it is little or no surprise to see Fabiano in particular as one of the favourites to win the Top Goalscorer Award, more importantly, the two players, together with their Brazil look create an impressive case for them winning the World Cup for the sixth time.
