Caring For Your Skin… Naturally

During your life your skin goes through different stages. In the early years it is smooth, unlined and doesn’t need a lot of looking after.

But when you reach your mid 30s skin becomes thinner and is less elastic, unfortunately, with the loss of elasticity skin begins to sag and small lines and wrinkles may appear.

Every day, without thinking, you bombard your skin with all sorts of chemicals; shampoo, soap and skin care preparations. Even that refreshing glass of wine after work could be detrimental to your skin.

Skin is a really clever organ, it’s the waterproof covering for your body but it can also absorb whatever you put on your face, neck, hands, etc. That’s why using products containing chemicals and synthetic ingredients, is not good for your skin.

Natural products are the best. They don’t contain any synthetic or chemical additives and are easily assimilated into your skin. The nutrients can support the newly produced cells and over time your skin will look brighter, more radiant and any lines will be less noticeable.

Let’s take a closer look at what can damage your skin:

Sun – Premature lines are caused by UVA rays that are capable of penetrating to the dermis layer of the skin. Free radicals produced by the rays disrupt collagen and elastic fibres and this results in wrinkles. UVB rays can damage DNA and this genetic mutation can cause skin cancer.

Using moisturising products, antioxidant treatments and applying sunscreen regularly will slow the onset of premature lines. And, if you switch to Mineral make up that contains TiO2 and ZnO natural sunscreens, you will be giving your skin the best chance to stay in good shape.

Harsh Environment – Air conditioning, pollution, detergents, additives in water, etc. can all deplete the moisture in your skin. Even if you apply moisturiser morning and night it may not be enough, try using a facial mist throughout the day to give both you and your skin a boost.

If you’re serious about having great skin, then you should removal as many chemicals from daily use as possible and replace them with natural and organic skin care products. They are absorbed quickly, go to work straight away and give your skin the greatest protection against environmental damage.

Aging – Skin becomes thinner as it ages and is more easily damaged. Aging reduces skin flexibility, new cell regeneration is slower and skin becomes dryer.

To slow this process, you should start a deeper moisturising regime from your mid to late 30s. Of course, if you’re older, it’s never too late to start. Use a different moisturiser in the morning from the one you use at night. This is also the time to introduce eye products as the skin around your eyes is thinner and can wrinkle quicker.

Try using a primer with a powder foundation or use a moisturising liquid or cream foundation.

Acne – This condition is caused by over active sebum production and proper use of natural skin care products will have a positive impact on the healing process.

Using a gel cleanser is best especially if you wash it off with warm or tepid water and a gentle cloth. There is no need to use a toner, just follow up with a light moisturiser.

Choose make up carefully, a Mineral foundation powder or a setting powder will be most beneficial.

Before you can decide on which natural products are right for you, you need to understand your individual skin type. Skin condition falls into four main types:

– Natural/combination
– Oily
– Sensitive, and
– Mature/dry.

Nourishing your skin from the inside

One of the most natural things you can do is drink plenty of water, either filtered or rainwater, this will help to keep you and your skin hydrated. There are no set amounts, so drink to satisfy your thirst.

Eating a balanced diet containing a wide variety of foods and restricting saturated fats, refined sugar and alcohol, will make a difference to the way your skin looks and feels.
