The longest and largest fundraising walk held to raise money for those living with Aids and HIV, the Aids Walk will celebrate its 25th year in 2010. 45,000 walkers are expected to attend, including those who have the condition, and those who have taken a confidential HIV test and had more fortunate outcomes but are still keen to raise money for this important cause. A ten kilometre walk which starts and ends in Central Park, New York, this is an event well worth training for. Celebrity participants in previous years have included Whoopi Goldberg, Hilary Duff, Joan Rivers and Cyndi Lauper. A fantastic atmosphere surrounds the walk each year and over the 25 years the event has been taking place, walkers have raised a phenomenal total of over 110 million dollars. So if you fancy stretching your legs in aid of all those people living with HIV or AIDS, make sure you head to Central Park on the 16th of May.

Dining Out for Life

For many, Dining Out for Life might seem like a rather more appealing way of contributing to AIDS and HIV fundraising than participating in walks or runs. All you have to do to donate is to fill your stomach! If you are planning to make dinner reservations in New York on the 27th April, simply make sure that you book into one of the many restaurants that are participating in the Dining Out for Life scheme. Order your meal, sit back and enjoy, and be happy in the knowledge that 25% (and in some cases even more) of your bill is going to be contributed to AIDS Community Services and the provision of a confidential HIV test. So order that extra dessert and don’t deprive yourself of that extra glass of wine – the fuller your stomach the more effective the fundraising.

A Game of Golf

The Scott Riklin Memorial Golf Tournament is an annual event held in memory of Scott Riklin, a young and successful businessman who tragically succumbed to AIDS complications in 1996. The tournament has been running for 14 years now, and welcomes golfers of all standards. So, if you’re good for a game of golf, why not head to the Juniper Hills Golf Course on the 25th of June. Your entry fee will go straight to the AIDS Action Committee, who focus on the prevention of new infections, and the effective care and treatment for those who have already had positive results from a confidential HIV test. Not only will you be exchanging good karma for a good game of golf, but your entry fee also includes green fees, cart rental, a souvenir golf shirt and balls, and a buffet dinner with an open bar. This might just be the most worthwhile game you’ll play for a long time!
