Exfoliation – A Revolution For Your Skin
Exfoliation is a treatment, most often used when you are receiving a facial in a spa treatment centre. Exfoliation is a complex process that essentially cleans your skin of dead cells, thus making it look and feel more alive and vibrant. It also serves a secondary purpose in that it allows for the easy entry to the skin of treatments in the form of creams and serums that form part of a larger regime of skin care.
The first form of exfoliation that is used in a spa setting is mechanical exfoliation. This is where the dead skin cells are physically rubbed or scraped off using an abrasive. The abrasives vary according to the treatment you are undergoing, but it is not unknown for coffee grounds and sugar granules to be used as a means of scraping dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.
Another way of getting rid of those cells through exfoliation is chemical exfoliation. As the name suggests, this is a more subtle and perhaps less invasive way in which to remove the cells. Applied enzymes and acids loosen the cells and effectively encourage them to break away. These agents can be applied through a special peel. Some facial peels using such agents can be quite aggressive in their nature. However, it is quite common for a facial peel to be a relatively pleasant part of your skin care regime.
Exfoliation is vital for your skin principally because the skin is always creating new skin cells at the lower level, which is known as the dermis. These cells are then pushed to the epidermis, which is the surface of the skin. As the cells make it to the surface they gradually die out and become filled with keratin. Keratin is good because it helps to protect our skin. However, keratin is quickly dropped by the skin to make way for the newer cells that are travelling up from the dermis.
Age makes the whole thing very complicated, in that it slows down the process. If you imagine a traffic jam situation, whereby the cells keep rising up but there is less and less space on the surface because the older cells are sticking around, this is why we get rough skin as we age. This is why exfoliation is both important and attractive to us, because it removes the lingering dead cells.
It is always best to try a good exfoliation, delivered by a professional in a spa treatment setting. This is because the will be able to tell immediately if your skin needs treating carefully due t excessive sensitivity. It also will allow the therapist to manage the treatment carefully, removing all of the nasty stuff from the skin on your face before the treatment is applied. Much easier than doing it at home.
Seek a good quality exfoliation through a full facial treatment from a recognised spa setting. They are not expensive, and, done regularly, will ensure you keep your skin looking young and fresh, no matter what the world throws at you.
