Getting Better on SAT Scores

Most of the students give the SAT re-test, even twice and more than that. It’s obvious they do it to increase their SAT reasoning scores. However, the research shows that probability is very less that your scores would increase after re-test. In fact, you might end up with even lower scores. So, the question arises, why do students still go ahead with re-tests?

Some students choose to train under SAT preparation courses so that they can get better score in their second or third re-take attempt. Or they may simply purchase new preparation documents or even practice more sample test papers to increase their chances of getting good scores. Some part of the students re-appears for exam hoping they might do well at second attempt. Out of all, students who actually tried preparing for exam before re-appearing for SAT test have got better chance than who are simply hoping for good scores in second attempt and may even see dip in their scored.

So if you are the one who would like to get better on your SAT score, here are some tips for you to achieve the same:

One-Section Per Test

There are numerous students who complain about the depth of the SAT test which consume more time than specified and also that the three sections contain lot of topics making them tough to handle. The good news is you are not required to handle everything!

Majority of the colleges want scores of specified section only which means, if you have attempted test thrice. You can report your score of your best attempt section given in any year, so the resultant score will become fusion of three sections given in any year. Let’s take this example, a test given thrice with following scores.

January 2008 CR 620 M 640 W 550

March 2008 CR 690 M 430 W 460

May 2008 CR 540 M 560 W 690

If you take score for each year, they are comparably equivalent. However, your actual SAT score would be the sum of the top score from each section, therefore:

SAT Score CR 690 M 640 W 690

This collective score is much higher than those three tests given on separate dates. So what we are trying to focus at is one must strive to improve on one section rather than all and getting consumed. The example clearly shows how one can improve the overall score by concentrating on one section.

Attempt the Easier First

It’s not that easy to score in SAT exam, however, there are always few questions which are “giveaways”. If we highlight the “worth” of every question, it comes out to be same for all whether it is tough or easy. Therefore, it is always advisable to bag the easy score first which you are sure to score on and leave the difficult one. Let’s take an example to understand it more clearly:

Raw Score = Queries Correct – (1/4) Queries Wrong

Easy Points: Strategy Score = 15 – (1/4)2 = 14.5

Non-Easy Points: Score = 16 – (1/4)8 = 14

The above example clearly illustrates that it’s always better to attempt all the questions you know very well and then attempt the tougher ones. This amplifies your numerical anticipated value.

An Old Proverb, Practice Makes Perfect

Different sections of SAT exam contain different kind of questions, like math section contains geometry, fill-in-the-blanks, reasoning and algebra questions. The best way to get familiar with each type of questions is by spending good time in practicing. Timing being another crucial part in test, and you will learn how to manage yours by practicing more and more until you sense a feel for the test.
