Guide to Creating a Cozy Retreat in a Spacious Living Room

A large living room is an ideal place for entertaining and relaxing with family and friends, and anyone with a small living room would probably be happy to trade up for a more spacious version. But wide open spaces can seem cold and impersonal. People who are fortunate enough to have a big living room can use a few interior design fundamentals to create a welcoming look.

Warm It Up with Color

Rich warm colors will make a space feel more intimate and inviting. Bring ambience and warmth that will engulf any space by selecting rich hues of apricot, mango, umber and burgundy. Sample jars of paint make it simple to try out an individual color in an inconspicuous area prior to committing to a shade and being out the expense of paint for the whole room.

When choosing furniture and accessories, add contrast with complementary hues in warm tones. You can minimize the size and scale of a room and expand any space by providing contrast with similar colors. Color choices are important; opt for warm hues like paprika and gold and then tie in black to unite and ground the colors. Reinforce your chosen accent colors within the area by using boldly colored window treatments, pillows, lamps, hanging wall vase, lampshades, accessories and wall art.

Large pieces such as tall urns that can accent a corner or that are positioned on an open ledge, help to bring the room down to size and make it cozier.

Add Depth and Warmth with Wall Decor

Continue the warm palette in wall decor. You can add contrast and dimension to the area by hanging metal wall art, which also affords you the change to emphasize with your selected accent colors. Choose metal wall art with bold graphic designs in a contemporary space and classic motifs for a more traditional look. Wrought iron wall art will add definition to a large expanse of bare wall that would otherwise leave a room feeling empty and cold. Accent empty spaces above entries and windowsills by displaying rectangular or semi-circular wrought iron wall art. Metal or wrought iron wall art can lend style and richness to any living room, regardless of the decor theme.

Define Space and Get in the Zone

It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by a large expansive space that is continuous and unbroken. Create ‘zones’ in your large living room, delineating conversation areas, entertainment areas and so forth.

Area rugs can be used to define spaces. Choose a patterned rug that pulls your color choices together. Throw rugs may be used to anchor a space, arranging furniture around the perimeter.

– Pull furniture in toward the center of the room. Encourage conversation with guests by designing a conversation area; delegate an area using a rug, and then arrange a couch and a loveseat in a warm diagonal formation.

– Use a table and chairs on another end of the room anchored by an area rug for casual dining, game playing or impromptu gatherings – you have the space, now enjoy it!
