If you have not been on a cruise, the enjoyable activities, the wonderful people, the entertainment, the food, the atmosphere… Ah, it is a floating paradise.

But wait, how about working there? That way you get to enjoy what cruise vacations has to offer and get paid as well! Working in cruise ships gives you all the things you desire in life – Travel, Fun, Entertainment, Romance, and a Steady Paycheck!

“How do get I a cruise ship job?” That’s the question we’ll be covering right now.

Step One: Follow your passions and your skill sets. A cruise ship has a lot of jobs that require tending to: deck, engine, medical, photo, and hotel operations, galley (food) beauty, entertainment, bartending, pool hands, (and MANY more) are some of types of jobs available. Pick two or three that match your skill set and your passions.

Step Two: Follow the rules! Go to each cruise line’s website and apply according to their rules and requirements. It looks unprofessional and is frankly, annoying, when someone applies for a job and doesn’t follow the instructions given.

I recommend you apply at 10-20 different cruise lines. This will take a few hours of your time, but it’ll virtually guarantee success.

Step Three: Follow Up! When you apply at 10-20 different cruise lines, make an excel spreadsheet or make a graph listing the cruise lines in a column going down the page. Then, make three additional columns labeled “Recommendations,” “Call,” “TY Card” “Call.”

Here’s what these mean:

Recommendation: Two days after you send in your application, send three letters of recommendations in to HR. If you don’t have them, ask for them. Better yet, write the letters yourself and get some prestigious people to sign and print them on their letterhead. When you send these letters in, your application will suddenly go to the front of the stack since the cruise line must find your application to match the letters along with your resume.

Call: One week later, call the cruise line asking if they have everything they need to make a hiring decision. This isn’t the time to beg for a job. Just ask if they have everything they need to give you a job.

TY Card: Immediately after getting off the phone, send a thank-you card addressed to the person you spoke with.

Now listen, from the perspective of a person who has hired and fired many people, when someone follows these steps, in this order, I hire them in a heart beat. Instead of them telling me they have their act together, they show me they have their act together. In turn, they get a job.
