How to Make the Perfect Cafe au Lait

You don’t have to go to the local coffee shop to find a perfect tasting cafe au lait. Why not indulge in this treat each and every morning? It is not necessary to save it for a special occasion or to spend a small fortune on something you can make at home for pennies. This simple pleasure is a small luxury you can easily make at home as long as you have the right ingredients.

Start with the right beans

This is where you need to do a bit of research first. Make sure you are buying high quality beans. Be aware that the most expensive beans don’t always equal the best tasting or highest quality ones, either. Do a little research and experimentation to find the best tasting beans you can afford.

Use the right equipment

After you have found your beans, then you need to use a bean grinder. Again, price doesn’t necessarily equal the best quality. Find a grinder that will grind the beans to a consistency that is not too fine. You want it to be slightly coarsely ground. Meanwhile, have a kettle of water boiling and get out an inexpensive French Press. Place the ground coffee beans in the bottom of the press and pour the boiling water on top of them. (Start with about 5 tablespoons of ground coffee for each 6 cups of hot water, but in the future, you can adjust for taste.)

Take your time

Here is one of the most important parts. This takes a bit of patience on your part: Don’t push the French Press plunger down right away. Slowly, slowly press it down a bit by bit, waiting several minutes before each small plunge to allow the coffee to brew. Allow some time to create a rich, dark roast. Some people say the longer you take to press the plunger, the better the coffee will taste.

Finishing Touches

Meanwhile, heat up some whole milk. There are several ways to do this. You can heat the milk in a small pot on the stove or you can microwave it in a coffee mug. If you like foamy milk and don’t have a device to do so, try this trick: Put your milk in a small jar. Put the lid on the jar and shake it vigorously. After shaking for a few minutes, take the lid off and microwave just the jar for 1-2 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on it as you do so to make sure it doesn’t’ t get too hot or overflow. When you take the milk out of the microwave it should be hot and foamy.

With a small investment of good beans, a decent coffee bean grinder, an inexpensive French press, a kettle and milk, you can make delicious a cafe au lait every single morning at home for next to nothing. If you want to truly feel luxurious, you can also buy French -style coffee bowl and drink your au lait out of that every morning.

It is as close to sitting at a sidewalk cafe in Paris as you can get while sitting in your own kitchen.
