Keyboards Can Make You Sick

By now, you are all familiar with the concepts that germs make you sick and that they can easily be transferred among people by ways other than hand-to-hand contact. Virtually everything you touch that is also at least occasionally touched by others can be a way to acquire influenza, staph, e-coli, cold viruses, etc. Since about 80% of the resulting illnesses are preventable, it just makes good sense to do everything you can to minimize exposure. Lost productivity is an enormous expense.

You are also familiar with the benefits of using sanitizing hand wipes and disinfectant wipes (for surfaces) to control the spread of these bugs. They are routinely found in grocery stores for carts, in gymnasiums for equipment, in offices for shared equipment, in schools, hospitals, and government buildings as well as countless other environments where public contact is unavoidable. They have come to be associated with businesses that care about their employees and their customers.

There are several other valuable uses for wet wipes that you may not have considered. One of the most ignored is the computer keyboard. Unlike most surfaces that can be washed or sprayed, keyboards do not like to be inundated with liquids, antiseptic or not. So, we tend to avoid cleaning them altogether. They build up that rather disgusting brown grunge that we have all noticed, but usually ignored. You don’t have to look at that any longer.

The solution is to wipe down the keyboard surface as well as the hand resting areas with disinfecting wipes any time someone else has occasion to use your computer. Often, there are shared workstations in offices and a wall-mounted dispenser can be placed nearby. Not only will the keyboard be 99.9% free of germs (at least until someone else shows up!), it will be clean in appearance as well. It’s amazing how different a keyboard or a mouse looks after a swipe with a wipe.

There are several other items that you can both clean and sanitize with antibacterial wipes. Most telephones, both wired and wireless, are similar in construction to keyboards – spraying or sponging them can short-circuit the electronics and even void your warranty. The safest solution is to use either hand wipes or disinfectant wipes, as there will be no residual liquid to seep down into the keys. The handsets stay clean and germ-free. They are also perfect for printer and copier buttons, which tend to get a lot of shared usage. Then there is the TV or radio in the break room and the microwave in the kitchen…

You will now find both wet wipes for hands and disinfecting wipes for surfaces that are much gentler on hands, your sense of smell and are not toxic like the older, alcohol-based types. The costs are quite reasonable as well, if you order from a commercial supplier. Be sure the wipes you buy are EPA approved. Many times you can find companies that will supply you with a free dispenser with the initial order.
