Every year about this time of the year, when the daffodils pop out of the ground, and the Bradford Pear blossoms suddenly appear, I’m reminded of the woe I face in just a few weeks when I open the swimming pool and do my work at home. And each year, I’m reminded of the old saying that the only thing better than having a swimming pool is having a neighbor who has one. It would best get paid to install a pool in my neighbor’s yard! I would have been paid back with a profit in savings after all these years of maintenance.

But I didn’t get paid by my neighbor, just a thank you for using it. At the end of the swimming season, I would finance the barrage of chemicals necessary to add to the pool water before closing for the winter. Keep in mind the swimming season around here is about three months-maybe four stretching it.

For years I covered my pool with a solid cover and used water bags around the pool edge to hold the pool cover in place. The entire winter I was plagued with the necessity to keep the water pumped off and the water bags in place. If the water wasn’t pumped off quickly enough, the weight would drag the water bags out of place and it was a constant hassle to keep the awkward arrangement in working order. Add to that, the constant barrage of leaves and debris that gathered on the cover and remained after the water was pumped off. Talk about work at home!

Finally, at summer’s opening, I would inevitably dump filthy sludge into the water when dragging the impossible to clean cover off the waters top. No matter how many chemicals I added before I closed the pool, the water became grimy and murky as the winter passed by. Added to the natural deterioration of the water quality was the dump of sludge I mentioned above. I figured I would get help from my neighbor’s son, and he thought it best get paid to help me. The task then begun to clean the water to a sparkling clean, clear condition to make ready for swimming. In the spring I sprung for more cleaning chemicals-kind of poetic don’t you think?

Several years ago I decided to buy the open mesh cover with bungee type straps that stretched across and firmly attached to anchors in the concrete deck-eliminating the solid cover and the need for water bags and eliminating some of my work at home. I figured it best get paid to install the cover by reducing the cost to run the pool cover pump year after year. I estimated it will only take about 300 years to pay for it in pump power costs.

Now the rain water is allowed to pass right through to the swimming pool water eliminating the need to keep the top pumped off. Now how brilliant is that? Pretty smart, you might say-well maybe not. You see it is now necessary to keep the top cover pristinely clean, because any debris filterd right through the cover and into the pool water. But that’s not much work at home, right? Wrong! Needless to say the water is now encrusted with filth and murkier than ever when opened in the spring. Get out the check book.

I could have saved a fortune by installing a pool in my neighbor’s yard. He would have loved me for a while, before he realized I had pulled the wool over his eyes. And I could be sitting at my laptop, drinking ice tea and earning money through a work at home program rather than working at home on a pool.
