Sad Depression – More Than Just Feeling Sad
How many times have you heard people say that they are depressed when they feel sad or under the weather? This term is casually used to describe any state of low mood and one hears many people use this term to describe how they are feeling. Depression is actually more than just feeling sad as it also includes hopelessness and helplessness. It is believed that more than 10% of all adults suffer from this condition. It is prevalent amongst younger sections of the population as well. It is known to exist in families so there is believed to be a genetic reason for this problem.
Depression is a condition that has plagued man since ancient times and there are many references to it in classical literature and mythological works. As a matter of fact, it was once known as melancholia, which means black bile.

Severe depression is a very dangerous condition because it can result in a whole host of physical ailments apart from just feeling sad. It can result in coronary heart disease, hypertension and asthma. Another negative effect is that this condition can increase the morbidity and mortality rates from these medical conditions.
It has also been observed that depression can very easily exist along with other mental illnesses, aggravating their symptoms and interfering with their treatment. If left untreated, it can very easily result in suicide. The impact of severe depression on the patient’s family is immense. It can lead to substance abuse, alcoholism, anxiety, weight problems and low self esteem.
There are many drugs available these days that are very effective in combating depression. If taken along with the correct psychotherapy treatments and lifestyle changes, a person suffering from severe depression has a very good chance of recovery. It no longer a cause of embarrassment since its causes are better known and treatments are easily available.
