The Basics About Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are often given a bad press because they are very simple and basic pieces of soft furnishing design. However, there are a lot of good features about this particular branch of soft furnishings, and this article will outline the basic information about the style, as well as offer some information as regards their care.

The blind is, essentially, a length of fabric stretched around a roller, which is generally a piece of wood. Attached to this basic set up will be some kind of spring mechanism that will allow the blind to be lowered or raised according to the needs of the user. Right at the bottom of the blind will be a piece called a lath that holds the blind in pace and gives it some weight.

Some manufacturers favour metal rollers, principally because this adds an extra level of durability to the product. They often do this both with the roller and the lath, and this is actually often a feature on more exclusive designs.

When fitting your blind, a few simple instructions do need to be borne in mind so that you don’t make mistakes that could make it difficult to get the look you want. First of all, as soon as you get the blind home, unroll it and hold it to the inside of the window frame. Then you can quickly get a feel for where you will fix the brackets for the blinds.

Grab the brackets and slide them so that they are half an inch from the front edge of the window frame. Repeat this process on the other side of the window and then note where the screws are going to be fixed. Drill your holes and then fix the brackets to the inside of the frame.

Insert any other screws in the same way and then get your inserts the blind will fit to into the brackets. Then extend your blind as far as you possibly can, allowing it to hang for a while before you start using it.

When it comes to taking care of your blind, you may not be surprised to know that there is no mystery to it, no arcane tricks that you have to learn to look after this most basic of blinds. In fact, the materials you use are quite commonplace. All you need is a toothbrush, some warm water and some laundry detergent.

Grab a container and fill it with warm water, then remove your blind, taking care to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the blind into the tub of water. Before you put the blinds in add a cup of the detergent.

Put your dirty blinds into the water and detergent mix. You may need to leave it a little longer than a few hours if the dirt is particularly bad. If it does not fit into the container, you can fold it, but make sure you work into those creases and folds before you place the blind back where it belongs.

If the dirt still lingers, find another container and fill that with water and detergent. Then use the toothbrush to work away at the stains.

So that’s that. Basic instructions on what roller blinds are, how to fit and how to care for them. They can be extremely practical and inexpensive design options, and are most definitely worth considering if you want to add a new lease of life to a room.
