Trade Show Graphics 101: Terminology Explained

There are a wide range of printing options available for use in designing and constructing a booth display. The jargon can be overwhelming, so let’s take a look at some of the options available and the effects on offer.

Photomural Panels

This is simply a large graphic panel which can be used alone or as one of several panels in a mural pattern extending across the entire display area (a 10’x10′ pop-up display will have four panels).

Hooks and magnets are used to hang the panels on the mounting frame which makes them very easy to assemble and stow away after use. The photomural panels can be combined to create a seamless image or a variety of effects as required.

Detachable or Rollable Graphics

These are smaller graphics used in conjunction with pop-up displays which use fabric panels mounted upon the display frame. Velcro is used to secure the graphics to the fabric panels and this allows you to vary the use of graphics to suit your needs and the audience.

Frontlit Rollable Graphics

These are high-res graphic prints which may be reproduced in matte, glossy or luster finishes which also serves to protect the print. They are usually mounted onto an solid, opaque mount and then fixed to the display panels with velcro.

Rigid Mounted Graphics

Ubiquitous at trade shows, these are very high quality graphical images but they require special handling and packaging when not in use.

Sintra Mounted

Another high resolution print which uses Sintra, a PVC backing board to overlay the image upon and which comes in varying thickness (2mm, 3mm and 6mm). Sintra prints are opaque and can be printed on either side of the Sintra mounting which may be fastened using velcro or installed within a framing system.

Acrylic Mounted

Acrylic mounts are also known as Plexi-mounted, and use a high resolution print applied to a translucent or clear sheet of acrylic. There are varying thicknesses available up to half-inch. They are capable of being back and frontlit, however they are used to great effect when they are mounted inside light boxes or in conjunction with metal extrusion displays.

Stand-off Graphics

Aluminum barrels are used to hold a variety of signage and banner displays – the imagery is designed to be seen from a pre-set distance (hence the term “stand-off”) and they can work horizontally and vertically – they provide a great visual effect for attracting attendee attention.

Dye Sublimation Fabric Graphics

Dye sublimation graphics work by printing an image to a medium, typically paper, which is then heated so the dye taken up by the paper is then transferred to the fabric upon which the final design will be worked. Sublimation means that the individual threads of the fabric are infused with the dye, and this means that you can wash the fabric your washing machine at home without affecting the design. Dye sublimation printing is frequently used in conjunction with tension fabric display designs to great effect, and they provide a lightweight combination display which allows for full customization and excellent value-for-money.
