Why Do Men Seem to Fear Commitment?

It’s a general consensus, as well as hot topic in film and television, that men fear commitment. It is something that has frustrated women for all time and has been the topic of many philosophers study. Where does this fear come from, is it primordial, ingrained in us from the days of lay and move on? Perhaps it is taught by modern society, which drives the idea of the individual, and with the male one-track mind once he becomes an individual it is hard to become a pair… It is hard to know for sure what the answer is but all one can do is tried to understand.

Humanity has come a long way in terms of evolution, and the male vs. female debate has gone on since the time of early evolution. The genders are nearly identical fundamentally but are slightly different enough to fascinate humans for, likely, all time. Originally survival and procreation were the main and likely only thoughts running through the heads of human ancestors. Things like relationships were very general, not as intimate, we understood little about ourselves let alone each other. Families were likely to have formed but the concept of cheating likely wasn’t in existence for hundreds if not thousands of years of evolution. Humans would have started the same as every other animal and would have had similar if not identical life styles. This lifestyle would have led to a lot of “wander,” type males in the human race. It is very likely as a species humans mostly lived together in small packs similar to tribes or clans, but males who would have taken full advantage of their physical abilities to survive would likely have out lived many women and thus would have led a more isolated life. Also when examining the process of child birth in early evolution it is not that radical to believe that women very often, more so than not, would die in child birth, thus forcing the man to move on and not develop the sense of attachment that the woman who died most likely would have.

Continuing with this early theory on evolution and incorporating it into modern day society and media it could be argued that this innate feeling of constantly having to be able to toughen up and move on, cut ones losses and start a new is only enforced by modern thought of individualism. The modern media portrays the lonely Brand Viagra wanderer as the “ideal,” human male, the tall dark and handsome warrior heartless to most, to maintain this image it is difficult to then commit oneself to a woman and a family, especially when the media is filled with sex related material promoting a selfish material based lifestyle which gravitates around getting laid. The party animal side can take over and block out reason and judgment from the confused modern male and cause him to perceive his personal goals, wants, and needs as the only priorities in ones life. Of course there are the few men out there that this does not apply too do not lose hope!
