Wismar Germany

The small port town of Wismar is part of the Hanseatic League which can be found in northern Germany towards the Baltic Sea. The town is located in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is about 45 kilometres east of the city of LÜbeck and about 30 kilometres north of Schwerin. The town of Wismar is placed within a natural harbour which is part of the Bay of Wismar. The natural harbour itself is well-protected by a promontory.

You will find the town of Wismar has many interesting sights which are waiting for you. These will include landmarks which are an integral part of the town. One place that you may want to visit is that of the huge Market Place Square which can be found in the centre of the Old Town. This market place is about 10,000 square metres is surrounded by elegant buildings which come in a range of styles from that of the 14th Century North German Gothic style to that of the 19th Century Romanesque revival style.

Besides looking at these interesting architectural sights you may want to check out the elaborate wrought-iron fountain which is known as the Wasserkunst. This fountain was imported to Wismar from Holland. To the north of the square you will see the neoclassical style Town Hall which was built in 1817 to 1819. Another building to see here is that of the Alter Schwede – the Old Swede – building was erected in the square around 1380. This building is an ancient Gothic style warehouse which is well worth seeing.

As with many places in Germany, you will see reminders of the devastation caused by World War II and one such reminder you will find in Wismar is that of the tower church of Marienkirche or St Mary. This 80 meter tower is the only remainder of the original Gothic Brick structure which was built in Wismar during the early 13th Century. The church suffered heavy damage in World War II and finally during the East German Communist government it was destroyed in 1960.

Other sights you will find good to see while you are in Wismar will include churches such as St George church – in German this church is known as St Georgen-Kirche – and it was built in the early 13th century. You will see this church is an elegant cruciform style church. The St George church was destroyed during the Second World War but is was rebuilt back into elegance in 1990. The other church you should see while you are in Wismar is that of the church of St Nicholas or Nikolaikirche as it is called in Wismar by the locals. This church was built in 1381 to 1460. You can see the lofty vaulting which considered as a good example of the influence of the church of St Mary in LÜbeck.

Germany is truly a fascinating country to visit. As with many of its cities you will find that coming to Wismar is an experience that you shouldn’t miss. Here you can savour the Old World delights mixed in with that of the modern world.
